Back on the road, today we headed up the coast to Sawtell for lunch. After a walk on the beach to gain our exercise goal for the day we lunched at The Kiosk which we discovered when we visited Sawtell in June last year. We couldn’t go past the BLATs. Delicious!
We watched a table of Karens who rearranged the tables to accommodate their group. The staff were OK with this, I think it happens all the time to fit different sized groups, but they were specifically asked for an area to be kept clear so that staff could circulate. Of course, the Karens ignored this request and effectively blocked the area they had been asked to keep clear … and then sang a cappella which was weird. Or maybe impromptu singing in public only seems weird when you can’t sing a note yourself??
After lunch it was time to start heading inland. We drove along the Pacific Highway until it branches into the Pacific Motorway heading to Ballina and Big River Way heading towards Grafton. We took the left fork to keep heading inland on the B91. In Grafton we found a BP servo to refuel and stretch
our legs before continuing along the B91, now the Summerland Way, towards Casino. To be clear this is Casino the town in northern NSW not a casino.
The bad news on the drive up was that my cousin’s middle brother and his wife are not well and are being tested for COVID. Unfortunately, it’s looking like they will have to miss the party AND the 80
th Birthday celebrants are having car troubles. Not the sort of stress needed when already anxious about their function going well tomorrow night.
We checked into the Milgate Motel on the main drag through town. I think pretty much ALL the motels are on Centre Street (Bruxner Highway) that runs through Casino. The motel is very dated, but the room is quite large and clean which is what really matters.
The ever (un)reliable Google Maps told us that there was a Mexican restaurant and a Fish and Chip shop next door to each other in town. OK, let’s walk into town to check out the Mexican and if we don’t like the look of that or can’t get in, we’ll have fish and chips. Hmmn, despite Google’s indication that both were open,
both were closed. The Fish and Chip shop didn’t even have a sign up to say when it will be open. At least the Mexican had a sign up saying they are taking a break and will be re-opening on the 10
th of January. Not that that helped us.
We walked down past the Commercial Hotel which was open and had a sign up saying they were doing dinner BUT there was nobody there! We are always a bit dubious about eating somewhere where nobody else is eating. Oh well, let’s go to the Returned Services Memorial (RSM) Club even though the party is there tomorrow night. The food in the bistro is sure to be different from the catering tomorrow night.
We signed in at the club and discovered there was nobody out and about in downtown Casino because they were all at the RSM! They had an extensive menu of all the usual pub/club meals. Bernie went a half rack of ribs and I had the senior’s rissoles and mash, thinking to save Roast of the Day for Sunday night when we’ll probably be back for dinner again?!
