A really interesting place with a quintessentially Australian laid-back culture. I wouldn't say it's 'hippy' anymore but certainly relaxed and seemingly carefree. There are many surfers in this town (who mostly swim away from the main beach) and they add a certain cool dude, laisser faire ambience. Also many young travellers who bring life and enthusiasm. Everyone seems brown and gorgeous and to dress up means to wear sandals instead of thongs of shorts instead of just a cosi.

Beach can be crowded but with that comes a bit of a party atmosphere in the evenings. Good music everywhere you go.

Highlights:

• The market on 1st Sunday of the month behind the Friendly Inn. EVERYTHING!
• The main beach that stretches forever
• The Great Northern Hotel bar food - the best hamburgers and chips
• The forest walk up to the Byron Lighthouse (and swims along the way)
• Walking through Awakwal National Park from Paterson Street to the stunningly beautiful Tallow beach
• Music each night at the Beach Hotel
