25th June, 2009. Travel to Reno, Nevada.
Left Auburn nice and early (8.30am) and headed for Reno, great run on Highway 80 even though we struck road works on a large section of road. Climbed to over 6500ft, rising over the Sierra Mountains. The road works involved pouring a foot of reinforced concrete over the existing road, huge job when you are doing a 4 lane highway.
Down into Reno, a stop at Cabela's (a sports shop that every town should have), then to the Grand Sierra Resort (hotel and RV Park). All booked in by 12.30pm, so a walk through the Hotel/Casino, a donation of $8 to the Slot Gods and then down to the Rodeo Arena.
Nothing like this in NZ, the Rodeo lasts for 6 days and nights, with prize money of $1 million up for grabs over the six days. An indoor arena where we watched Cowboys and their horses split one steer from 27 and keep them split, no mean feet. Had a look at the 50+ stalls selling everything Cowboy (they had a cowboy hat made out of Beaver for sale at $2000 US and they sell them for up to $5000), there were
also around 20 - 30 Fair rides, then at 6.30pm we went in to the Rodeo.
An event to remember, capacity crowd (around 15,000 people), Bucking Broncs, Saddle Horses, Calf Wrestling, Calf Roping, Barrel Racing and Bull Riding PLUS displays from Cowgirl Riders, Stunt Riders, Carriage Displays, a Buffalo event, Fireworks , Kids riding sheep and grown men chasing calves to tie a ribbon on their tail. A great night.
Had a chat to a policeman on the way out, really nice guy - these guys are armed to the teeth.
And we have tickets for the final on Saturday night.
