The University

The University has been interesting. I have only experienced it vicariously, of course, through friends, and the many students who came to our party last night. These are some of the interesting things I was told:

every student has a doctor assigned to them;

many courses are taken in leather chairs with catered food; and

90% of students had been graduating with honours, but this is apparently being changed, as someone suggested that it was inconsistent with the understanding of honours as a distinguishing mark.

These things are perhaps unsurprising for a place as ponderous as the University, but many students expressed great disappointment with it last night. These are some of the common complaints:

lecturers only want us to repeat what we read in the readings, the closer to verbatim the better;

people talk about poverty and disadvantage without reflecting on where they are; and

the American students say ridiculous things without discouragement from the lecturers.

This week the classes I am sitting in on start, and so I will pass from voyeur to participant, and judging by the above, maybe also from finding the University interesting to disappointing.
