Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.
Being an American (especially at this point and time) and most importantly a Southerner, really put me in the minority among the world of travelers. Unlike the many (not all; just more than less) travelers who moved around in packs consisting of their own countrymen, I went solo and never stuck to one particular group. I mingled my way among travelers from all parts of the world (all over Europe, Aus., NZ, Asia, Canada, Israel, and of course Latin America). This allowed me to gain other perspectives and hear ideas from many points of view. Through these interactions, I have become wiser in my understanding of other cultures and have gained a greater respect and loving appreciation for them all. When you judge another, you do not define them, you define yourself.
Well, I must say I have been truly inspired by all of your kind words, thoughts, and heart felt responses. It kept me motivated and allowed me to express myself. Not only was I educated about the people outside of my country, but I also learned much more about those that are in my life. A lot of you opened up and really shared your true feelings and thoughts with me; and I thank you. It just reaffirmed to me what a special group of friends I have; and how lucky we all are to have each other. I know I said before how I heard repeatedly throughout my travels these words; “Boy, you Americans sure are religious; especially you from the South!” Well, those words to me are a compliment that we should all be very proud of and live to reflect. I was happily surprised and deeply moved by some of your e-mails, and I must say it sure was good to hear. At first, I was very hesitant about what to say and what not to say in my journal; but then I realized that one should not be embarrassed and hide their true feelings - so I let it flow. Our friends should be companions who inspire us, who help us rise to our best.
Well, I guess it is time to bid you all farewell. I must say, it sure has been a fun ride! God Bless you all and I'm out!!!I soon realized that no journey carries one far unless, as it extends into the world around us, it goes an equal distance into the world within.
