The 45 Most Powerful Images of 2011
Significance, reaction to image, and questions that arise
1. 5 images:
Picture 5: The two lights that symbolized the World Trade Centers were shined at the former site in which they stood. I think this image is very powerful. Many people lost lives because of the 9/11 attacks and family that lost their loved ones. It is not only very emotional for everybody to remember the attacks, but to see the reflection of lights where they actually once stood, could hit everybody's soft spot.
Picture 7: The image of police officers that sprayed pepper spray into the face of a women at the Occupy Portland protest is rediculous and not neccessary. This picture is significant because many people can be against police using pepper spray in general, especially to keep the public under control. I think that it is not neccessary to use that huge amount of pepper spray, or to use pepper spray at all. Police should use pepper spray only when absolutely needed. Not just for foolish reasons. I feel that policemen use pepper spray as a back up if they cannot keep crowds under control. My question is what did that women do to cause the policeman to spray her? Why did the policeman use such a large amount of pepper spray, when he knows that a little bit can have the same effect?
Picture 19: This picture of firefighters sitting on the fire truck aerial ladder watching a news bulletin declaring that Osama Bin Laden is dead is a sense of relief and happiness. There were dozens of firefighters that were at the scene of the twin tower attacks. Many of them died. For them to hear that the man who caused the attacks was killed, was pure happiness and relief for them. I could tell this because one of them had their hands up in the air cheering. I was happy when I seen this picture for the same reasons most of those firefighters were happy for.
Picture 20: The picture of a dog that layed next to a casket of a Navy SEAL at his funeral is very upsetting. I could tell that this dog was very close to his owner and the dog was even heartbroken and sad because he lost someone that it loved very much. I can relate this dog to a person. A person would have the same feelings and would do the same thing as this dog if the person had the chance.
Picture 45: US Army soldier that gives and Afgan boy a high five hits a home run for me. This picture is awsome. I think that this Army soldier cares more than just the war and the other soldiers, but took the time out of the day to bond with the little boy. If I were in this Army soldiers shoes, I would do the same thing. It doesn't hurt to say hi or to bond with kids at the country your in. This picture is not only about violence and war, but also about peace.
2. The image that best explains my personality in 2011 is risk taking. The picture I included above was taken a couple months ago when I had the chance to fly a small plane for an hour. I was more excited than anything. I was a little nervous, but I did have an instructor next to me to assist the whole way, which was pretty cool. When I got up into the sky it was breath taking. The instructor lead me into the direction of Lake Michigan, and from then on it was all in my hands. I got to fly around the Series Tower, circled around my house, and got to do a couple to turns over water. It was awsome. Besides taking a risk of flying a small plane, school is very challenging this year. I often times take risks in school in terms of improving my grades, activities, and extra credit. In 2011, risk taking is something that I did a lot of and will continue to do in 2012 and for the rest of my life.
3. Images and photos can be a valuable resource to historians because it gives them something visual to look at and explore. Besides just picking apart words, a historian can get a lot of information from a picture. The weather, clothing, technology, emotion, culture, and to actually see who the person is and not just reading words about the person. Sometimes historians need more than just passages, diaries, etc., to help them out. Pictures can reveal a whole new world or idea.
