Hummingbirds
Coleman, Texas Well, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, including our summer trip ,so on Thursday, August 14, 2008, we had to do just that -- end out trip and head home. It was mostly an uneventful trip where we would drive a couple of days, find a nice RV park and stop a couple of days, then travel again. The route we took is as follows:
August 14, 2008 Happy Vally RV Park in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.
August 15, 2008 - August 17, 2008 -- Army Corp of Engineers' Park on Lake Cochita, Santa Fe, New Mexico. This was a nice park to stop and relax a few days. By the time we stopped at this park, we had purchased a hummingbird feeder (since we had seen hummingbirds in several places we had stayed) and we had at least five hummingbirds visiting us. We hung the feeder outside our dining room window where we could enjoy their beauty and their antics. Being very territorial, they spent a great majority of their time chasing one another away from the feeder. They are truly one of nature's amazing and beautiful creatures.

-- Travelers World, Clovis, New Mexico.
August 19, 2008 - August 24, 2008 -- Army Corp of Engineers Flat Rock Campground, Coleman, Texas. This was such a nice, quiet campground, we decided to stay five days, most of which we were the only ones in the campground.
August 25, 2008 -- Holland Ranch Campground, Buffalo, Texas. This is one of those campgrounds where you are happy to spend only the one night (unfortunately there are those type campgrounds every where you go and when you need a place to spend the night and there is no other choice in the area, your options are limited). The couple who owned the campground did have three donkeys and when I walked up to the corral they came running, I am sure, because they thought I had something for them to eat.
August 26, 2008 -- August 27, 2008 -- Texas Pelican RV Park, Vinton, Louisiana
August 28, 2008 -- Hidden Oaks Family Campground, Hammond, Louisiana
August 29, 2008 - September 1, 2008 -- I-65 RV Campground, Creola, Louisiana. We stopped here in order to visit with our friends Henry and Pat White who live in Bay Minette,
Alabama. Bay Minette had no campgrounds so this was the closest one. We only got to visit with them one time because Hurricane Hannah was passing close to this area and the weather turned nasty. We weren't sure if we should leave, as Hanna was expected to produce gale force winds and heavy rains in the area, but in the end decided to stay and take our chances. Luckily, the winds passed us by and even though we did get rain, it did not produce any flooding in the area where the park was located.
September 2, 2008 - September 13, 2008 -- Port St. Joe State Park which is close to Apalachicola, Florida. We have been to this park several times and always enjoy our time here. The campground is nice, the camp sites provide privacy and right over the sand dunes is a beautiful white sand beach which goes on for miles. Again, another hurricane, Ike, became a concern while here. The park let each camper know that there was a possibility that during the morning high tide when Ike would be closest, there could be some flooding of up to two feet and that the road

Coleman, Texas leading into and out of the park would be underwater in one particular area which is prone to flooding. However, after talking to one of the rangers, we decided not to leave because the section of the campground where we were was unlikely to flood, and it didn't. There was one area which did get some minor flooding, but not as much as was anticipated. We did have some wind and rain, but we have had worse when down the Keys. However, for much of the time we were here the days were beautiful. I would go down to the beach in the early afternoon, usually around 1:00, with my beach umbrella, chair, book, a snack and a cooler with Cokes and would stay until after sundown and managed to get a nice tan and some beautiful sunset pictures. I also walked the beach collecting shells, which is one of the things I love to do when on a beach, much to Dee's dismay. He says I have too many shells and not enough space to keep them, but what does he know. LOL A couple of times when he came down to the beach, he would bring his stunt

Holland Ranch Campground, Buffalo, Texas kite and have a good time with it. One day we took a drive to St. George Island, another state park in the area we have heard good things about. We wanted to see if it would be a place we would like to come. The campground is nice (not as big as at Port St. Joe), although the beach is not quite as close to the campground as at Port St. Joe. Even though the campground is nice, the sites are closer together with less buffer area, therefore less privacy between sites. Given my choice I would rather go to Port St. Joe.
September 13, 2008 -- Arrived home about 4:30 p.m. It seemed strange to be pulling into our drive way after being gone five months and 10 days, which is the longest period of time we have ever been on the road and even at that I hated to see it come to an end.
We were home only long enough to take care of doctor appointments, get some yard work done, do a little visiting, and then on Thursday, September 25, 2008, we went to Ft. Desoto, which is a very nice county park
close to Tampa. The third annual Conch Reunion was being held Saturday, July 27, 2008, and was the second one we have attended (we did not know about the first one). There is a beautiful beach in this county park and the reunion was being held on the beach. We had a nice time visiting with many old friends from Key West and were told there were around 900 people there. Each year it has grown. The first year there was over 300 people and last year around 700 people attended.
On Sunday, September 28, 2008, we drove to Curry Hammock State Park, where we will be camp hosts until December 15, 2008.
