Last year at this time, I visited Yosemite for the first time in many, many years. I headed to the valley floor and did the Half-Dome hike, which was beautiful but not at all peaceful. 3 million people visit Yosemite during the summer and I think they were all there that weekend. This time, a friend and I headed to Tuolumne Meadows Lodge, a series of tent cabins on the edge of the Tuolumne River, with a dining tent and fire ring. It was perfect. We hiked to Lembert Dome for a 360 degree view with almost no one else in sight. We ate family style around tables of 8, with a different group at each meal. We got to meet some folks who have been coming to TML for more than 30 years and wouldn't think of going to the valley floor. I'll be back...

The white band to the left of Greg is snow, which was still around in patches. Tuolumne Meadows Lodge had just opened the week before because of snowfall over Memorial Day weekend.

...at least I think that's what it is. It was still early spring at this elevation (about 9,000 feet).
