Dogwoods in NC
White and pink dogwoods were everywhere Fayetteville, NC was our next stopover on the way to see brother and sister-in-law Tom and Joyce in Newport News. We didn’t have many expectations, but found Fayetteville quite charming in the spring.
We drove along the Dogwood Trail, meandering through lovely residential areas where the dogwoods and azaleas were in full bloom. Ft. Bragg, a huge Army base, is nearby and home to Special Operations. We visited the Airborne and Special Operations Museum, tracing the unit’s history from World War II, where it evolved from the OSS, to the present day.
All in all, we like the Carolinas a lot. As we’ve been traveling around the country scoping out retirement destinations, we may have to give the Carolinas a second look.
Newport News, VA has an 8,000 acre city park with campground, where we stayed for 8 days. We enjoyed getting acquainted with J. T. (the newest kitty residing at Tom and Joyce’s), playing backgammon and dominos, and sharing great home-cooked meals. A quick trip to Richmond, including dinner with niece Missy, rounded out our visit.
Next stop was College Park, MD, serving as home base for quick day trips into Annapolis, MD and Washington, DC.
