A dog is arguably man’s best friend. They are devoted to their owners; they are ready to do anything for the benefit of their owners. They are playful, they are adorable. And having them as our constant partner contributes to our mental health positively as well. They make us feel like we are not alone. When we have our dog beside us, we feel like they are there to share our mental strains.
To leave our important companions behind, when we go travelling the world, is understandably very taxing on the owners. They share that strong a bond that when they think of going somewhere, they want to take their companions along with them. And today I will be telling you what to be aware of while taking your dogs with you travelling.
While travelling by car, we have to keep the dogs in
dog carriers. Letting them roam around in the moving car is very very risky. Injuries can very possibly happen in such instances, where the dogs are let go of in a moving vehicle. So, dog carriers are a must have. Or of course, we could definitely install a crate or have dog seatbelts installed to keep them restrained. We shouldn’t let our lovelies sit in the front seat because if the airbag gets triggered it might injure them. Another very important thing is that must be mentioned here. That is, we need to have multiple rest stops along the way. Our pets will need to get from their dog carriers and flex their muscles or else they might face muscle pain and issues of such manner. We can also bring along a friend or a nanny to look after the dog. If we bring a friend, we can take turns while doing that. Having a human looking after our pet is a very reassuring thing to do. Leaving the pet in a car, alone, is a big no-no. So, this is definitely recommended. And one last tip, don’t let them get their heads out through the window. A lot of accidents happen this way and we don’t want to lose our precious companions to these careless accidents.
While travelling by airplane, I will firstly warn you against it. Flying is not a recommended mean of
travelling for dogs, especially for the ones, who have “pushy-faces”. For example, pugs, bulldogs etc. Because of the short nasal passage, they have trouble breathing in the oxygen in such a high altitude. So, your pet would definitely be more comfortable with a nanny back home while you fly to attend to your important business.
However, there are times when you don’t have any other option. You have to take your pet with you. Then you have to decide if the trade-off is worthy. Nonetheless, let’s look at what we can do to ease the journey for our companions.
Always try to take cabin. And ensure this beforehand, if the airline has any trouble with boarding with a pet in a cabin. Ensure if your dog meets their size requirements. Sometimes, the airlines don’t let relatively bigger dogs in the cabins. They will command an extra fee. But we think it’ll be worth it.
Now for you comfort I will be listing all the questions you need to ask the airline before boarding-
• Does the airline allow taking pets with you in the cabin?
• Do they have any kind of pet health and immunization requirements?
• Do they require a specific sort of carriers if a passenger wants to bring his/her pet?
• Do they have any problem carrying the pets in the cargo hold maybe?
These are some of the basic questions you have to ask the airline. But in case, you decide to take your pet using the cargo hold, there are some caveats that you need to aware of as well. Quite a number of pets in the united states seem to be heavily injured or maybe even dead while flying in commercial flights. This is mostly due to fluctuation in temperature and mishandling on the authority’s part. So, bear these in mind while you ponder over taking your pet with you by plane.
Not all ships have kennel facility. In fact, very few do. So, if you think of travelling by ship then make sure you call them and ensure if they have the necessary facilities.
AMTRAK follows the Pets-on-trains act. So, they allow selected breeds of pets and all kinds of service animals on the train. So, trains can be a great way to travel other than cars.
We often feel bad leaving our precious pets behind while going overseas. So, we understand the concern. Driving or using trains is the best possible way to go here. Happy travelling!
