In Which the Author Lists His Yellowstone Grebe Lake 3-Day Hike Backpack Contents:

This recent entry goes with a few back; it's the contents of the 3-day Yellowstone Grebe Lake hike...


Backpack, black with external plastic frame
10 metal tent pole stakes
1 backpackers tent, with footprint and rainfly
Sleeping bag with stuff sack (keeps it dry)
1 foam bedroll (a must!)
2 flashlights
2 pens
2 notebooks (Mead Composition and Mead Marble Memo)
Handkerchief (a must—many uses!)
Eyeglasses and eyeglass case (new to the line-up this year!)
Nalgene bottle (which I later left in Vik and Suzie’s van)
50 feet hemp string (food suspender)
Floppy hat (light and excellent shade, has a chin strap—a must!)
Environmental bug juice (not used)
Deet bug juice (not used)
Tobacco (to really capture the western feel)
5 lighters
5” blade knife, which I kept next to me while sleeping)
1 cooking pot (aluminum, camper’s style)
1 cooking lid
1 Coleman gas (full)
1 Coleman gas base (to help prevent accidents/fires; keep water nearby as well)
1 roll string
Sony Cyber-shot hand-held 7.2 megapixel camera
1 camera bag for camera
6 caribeeners (1 lost!)
6 plastic grocery bag (for trash, covering stuff, etc.)
2 larger trash bags (emergency water protectors)
GPS system (not used; charged with 3 hours worth of battery)
Binoculars (small, but good)
Hiking boots
“water shoes” (great for campsite and water crossings/swimming)
1 book: Death in Yellowstone National Park (geyser burn victims freaked me out)
1 box pastels (worked on sketch in tent)
Camp mirror (for signaling purposes—not used)
Wallet (why did I bring it? T’was a mistake)
Cabin key (for Vik and Suzie’s cabin, should I miss them)
Car keys
Emergency rain poncho
1 waterproof backpack cover
Camp soap
Mp3 player (not used)
Iodine tablets (to sanitize drinking water—a must)
Iodine tablets part 2: Takes the iodine taste out of the water)
8 AA batteries (should have used rechargeable)

Waterproof long pants (not used)
North Face rain jacket (got at discount from online)

2 pair long “cargo pants” (one that change into shorts—very handy)
1 pair light shorts (quick dry; fold into zippered back pocket)
1 camp towel (quick dry and small)
1 fleece (barely used)
1 long-sleeve shirt (RMU)

Food
8 “dehydrated camper-type” food (boil in pot, and let sit 13 minutes) Light to carry
1 box instant brown rice (Uncle Ben’s)
1 16 oz. bag cashews
1 European coffee pot (self-contained)
1 can Trader Joe’s ground coffee
1 bag trail mix (Trader Joe’s)
