We are here in Anacortes, Washington sitting in the "Seefahrt". The Seefahrt is our newly purchased Nor'Sea 27, a sailboat. We are not sure of the names origin and were originally going to change it but the name has really grown on us. We picked the boat up in Santa Cruz and hauled her up here to Anacortes. We stopped to see lots of friends and family along the way. When I first saw "The Fahrt" out of the water I thought, "There is NO WAY we are hauling that ourselves. NO WAY!!!" It seemed massive. Our F250 crew cab diesel truck looked like a tonka toy next to it. But, we did it. Or I should say Mark did it. He was just like a regular trucker pulling his load! Then we had the ... read more

Welcome Hey there everybody! In two days we get on the first flight... off to London and Christmas with Grandma. Tonight is the going away party at the Rendevous at which most of you will be getting this address at. It looks to be a fantastic time! Music, drinks and fun!!! I will keep this as updated as I will be able to, as I'm not carrying a laptop and will be at the mercy of cyber-cafes. Thankfully, there are many of them worldwide.... read more

Starting out near anacortes. I decided to start about 5 or so miles from the original start point because of a narrow bridge full of trucks I didn't want to go over in the dark or early morning. Still started on the coast at baybridge. I have a lot of stuff. 2 panniers and a trailer. Climbing up from sea level was a challenge in the rain. I made it to mile marker 104, so I probably traveled about 95-100 miles today. I had a close encounter with a truck which bent my rear axle and scuffed up my knee. The bent axle made climbing more challenging than it needed to be, but I didn't really notice it until after I had stopped for lunch. Anyway, tommorow is the real climbing day.... read more

Dear friends, Much has happened since we last updated this blog! We’ve travelled by helicopter, small plane, big plane, bus, boat, kayak, bike and dog sled! We’ve looked down on the highest peak in America. We’ve seen whales, seals, otters and sealions; bears, moose and wolves; puffins and eagles. Not to mention, of course, the whole wedding thing! We have photos of all this and more, far too many to post here, so we’ve picked a few favourites for now, and in the meantime we’ll try to keep this brief in the hope that we’ll get round to actually posting something before we get home next week! So let’s start with Juneau, where we were married. We were there for almost a week, staying at the fabulous Pearsons Pond a real home away from home, better ... read more

January 20 - February 1, 2006 Port Townsend - Anacortes, Wash. Loop We’ve completed the first leg of our shakedown cruise, as yesterday Matilda waltzed a full circle and is back to a place in the road she’s traversed before: Anacortes, Wash. Granted, it’s not far from our home port of Port Townsend, which we and Matilda (our Volkswagen Vanagon camper-van) departed on January 20, but in the last week and a half, we’ve all had our share of adventures and lessons learned. I (Shelly) will begin this first on-the-road entry of our 2006 Sabbatical travel blog by noting that transitions are hard. We didn’t expect this one to be easy. But neither did we anticipate how wrenching it would be to uproot ourselves, even willingly, from our settled life for this very different, albeit temporary, ... read more
