The winds have been blowing....not at our backs but across us. I am almost ready to dig out the scopalamine patch we got for the cruise in case we got seasick. Between the horrible bumpy road of Rt. 95 and the rocking of our big box boat.....raaaallph (puke sound). I can hardly write this blog....my fingers are all over the place like I am playing a piano with 49 fingers with mittens on. And forget playing my games - all I get is "poor connection" so it either freezes or I get kicked off the table because I haven't spun when actually it is spinning so fast it is like a blur wheel. Feel sorry for me? I hope so. Yesterday, our travels were broken up with a delightful and productive stop. Cory pulled into "JR's".....one ... read more

Let us cross over the river, and rest under the shade of the trees." Last words -- Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson ..................................... December 12, 1862 — Fredericksburg, Virginia The morning air is chill, but not freezing, thank God. I’m wearing the standard blue woollen Union army uniform, my McClellan cap or kepi sitting low over my brow, a long-barrelled musket held tight in my nervously-sweaty hands. There’s a frighteningly long straight line of my Illinois friends and neighbours on either side of me, with whom I’ve marched through many dark, cold nights. We are McClelland’s Dragoons, Company A, come from the farms just outside Chicago. There were times on this march to Fredericksburg when freezing rain made the chill run so deep into my core that I sh... read more

raining cats and dogs on the outside. warm and dry and comfortable here on the inside of Suzy the Aunt's house. Mark the Uncle is out and about. i have seen the big mo-chine that creates art work on clothing that Suzy uses for uniform embroidery and for motorcycle patches, and flags, and any kind of personal embroidery you need. she likes the specialty kind of things. she did a cobra on the back of a motorcycle seat and an American flag for the inside roof of a car for a car who participates in road shows. yesterday was floratic, that is, time spent with Flora. i went to the Botanical gardens in DC right next to the Capitol. plants from around the world. i especially liked the Sensitive plant where the younger leaves are sensitive ... read more

Well, after being home a scant 2 weeks, we hit the road again to see more friends and family, only this time heading north. In the short time we were home we: had some dermatological surgery for John, MRI for Trish's knee, brakes repaired on the RV, heat pump installed for the house, and doctor's visit and shot in the knee for Trish. No wonder we wanted to get back on the road. But heading NORTH in October? We left on October 19 in the rain and drove to Bedford, VA to see a former roommate of Trish's, Dee Thorn. We had visited Dee and Al before at their beautiful log home overlooking the Peaks of Otter in the Shenandoah Valley. Dee and her husband Al had retired to VA after living and working for years ... read more

The good news is that I woke up to power this morning but it was still windy and rainy. The wind and rain gave way to a beautiful day. I had received all of 6 claims up until this morning so I was quite concerned that I’d be making enough money here to cover my costs. I mean really who has earthquake insurance here. I was so upset about the few claims but then calculated and determined that I would probably make the advance that I’m supposed to receive, and soon I hope. I spoke to the supervisor on this storm and he told me that he had 2 catastrophe adjusters here; one to work Virginia and myself to work D.C. and Maryland. He thought that we would be receiving more claims before the whole thing ... read more

Luggage arrived this morning so I could take a shower and put on clean clothes. We never realize what we have until we do not have it at all. A shower and clean clothes was just want I needed! After I ran to Target, across the street and bought a lighter in the event that I needed my candles. A few (precious few) earthquake claims came in today so I called and set appointments when possible. By afternoon, after a little power nap, I was trying to find a motel for Monday p.m. when the power went out. The internet continued for another hour but then that went down too. The outer bands of Hurricane Irene had already started hitting but winds weren’t so high that it caused any concern, also rain was coming down but ... read more

June 2 - Thursday - Fredericksburg, Virginia 0944 AM I just paid for 2 more days here so that's done. I will be here till Saturday at least. Been up since 6 AM drinking my tea and thinking things over while making up my to do list for today. Then started working my way through the pile of brochures and maps I got yesterday on Fredericksburg and the Fredericksburg area. Supposed to be another hot day with high humidity and I need to get dressed and out the door soon so I can see the battlefield here before it gets too hot. Evening: June 2nd, Thursday Today the humidity was surprisingly low and it turned out to be a really nice day. I paid for two more days at my rathole here and toured the Fredericksburg ... read more

I spent today in a smallish city with a very large history: Fredericksburg Virginia. George Washington spent his boyhood here, and several siblings lived here their entire lives. The city was essential to providing armaments during the Revolutionary War. During the Civil War, the city found itself exactly half-way between enemy capitols, and four of the most destructive battles were ultimately fought here. These battles destroyed Fredericksburg so completely that it basically disappeared from noticeable history for the next century, until the civil rights movements of the 1960s. Fredericksburg Area Museum The history of the city is amply documented in a museum called the url=h... read more
