Karen and I drove down from Beverly to Washington DC for ALS Advocacy days, May 10-12. We went down on Thursday the 8th and stayed with our old friends Andrea and Jim in Chantilly VA. On Friday while they were at work we visited the new Smithsonian Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly at Dulles Airport. What a remarkable display of aviation history. The building opened in 2003, and provides enough space for the Smithsonian to display the thousands of aviation and space artifacts that cannot be exhibited on the National Mall. The building is an impressive size in the shape of a T and was named in honor of its major donor, and features the large Boeing Aviation Hangar in which aircraft are displayed on three levels. Visitors can walk among aircraft and small ... read more

With one week to go, we are madly trying to get everything prepared for the trip. 5 weeks seems long and deciding what to pack is becoming something of a challenge. We only have one daypack and one bag to carry everything we need in...clothes, shoes, pillow, blanket, personal hygiene equipment, medicines, mosquito net, binoculars, cameras, water bottles, snack foods, etc, etc. Where to put everything??? Paperwork has been completed and will be getting our malaria pills very soon. Passport and finances are covered and checked. Flight has been confirmed and also the hostel we plan to stay. Definitely are in process of double checking and rechecking everything. Still need to get a few more items and memorize like crazy for the bird exam. Not really looking forward to it, but it is important. So, important ... read more

Hello world! Well, we finally were able to get together and form this blog. We intended to start with the details of our honeymoon trip but got sidetracked. Now that we've got the ball rolling, we hope to update here more often chronicling our adventures to many different places and trips. Our first trip started in the Galapagos Islands lasting 11 days, truly a unique experience especially since we decided to go with a group that kept the trip from being the typical boring touristy type of thing. We actually got to hike, bike, snorkel, swim, boat, and explore while we traveled the various islands. It was incredible and certainly most memorable. We have pictures somewhere that we hope to post a few here sometime to give you the basic idea of what it was like. ... read more

Never have I longed more for the feel of my children's arms about my neck. Never have I craved more the comfort of my own home, surrounded by familiar sights, sounds, and smells. Never have I desired more a simple slice of pizza fit for an Italian, a cup of tea fit for an Englishman, and a cheesburger fit for an American. For Adventure and Danger are sweet, And against them we may test our mettle; But the wine by the fireside is sweeter, And knowing one's place. I hope you have enjoyed reading this blog as much as I have enjoyed writing it. May Jehovah God strenghthen your faith, as he has surely strengthened mine during my 13 days of 'Seeing the Good Land."... read more

After yesterdays blog was finished we had some drama in the unit at Econo Inn.....the toilet didnt flush properly !!This country really has some plumbing problems or is just perhaps some of the motels.Water seems to clear very slowly down the sink and on this occasion the toilet just didnt want to flush properly. So we contacted the front desk and gor the OK to move next door. This unit seemed to work OK and the A/C was quieter so we had a good nights sleep. Breakfast was all that we usually have plus eggs either scrambled or fried !! Great deal for the price of the unit. With full tummys we were on our way via VA-1 to Fredericksburg and the battleground of July 1862 when the Rebs had a significant victory over the Union forces where ... read more

Monday found us again in DC with an easterly breeze off the Potomac making the day comfortable. First on the agenda was a Capitol tour and the make or break issue is the tour guide. Ours was both informed and enthusiastic, A win for our side. Bets needed some energy, so off to the Rayburn building for lunch. As we sat down, 2 tables away just finishing lunch was the “Bulldog” Henry Waxman. He was meeting with 2 or 3 others and when they all left the table, he cleaned up the table and took all the trays to the trash area. Not your typical politico. Next it was off to Senator Boxer’s office to pickup tickets to the Senate gallery as they were convening at 3:00 to discuss the DoD appropriation. It was about a ... read more

Long time no talk. I gave Betty her chance to update the blog, but she did strictly a narrative with little humor or colorful imagery (OK flat out exaggerations). First, I would like to checkpoint our family visitations and locales honored with our presence. I think we left off with arriving at my sister Leslee in Northern VA outside DC. While there from Friday PM to Thursday AM, we visited the FDR and Jefferson memorials, Congress (House and Senate), lunched in the Rayburn building cafeteria, did a whirlwind trip through the Library of Congress (we were kicked out), drove to and visited Williamsburg, Yorktown battlefield (last battle and surrender of the British during the revolution), Jamestown (1st permanent British settlement in America), returned to Leslee’s for a take-out dinner and crashed so we could get up ... read more

Saturday (Sep 13) was a down day and the weather cooperated with temps in the 90s and humidity trying to catch the temp. In a word BRUTAL and the reason I don’t live in the east. Sunday was a bit better weather-wise, but still hot and humid. Sunday is a bad day to visit DC because there are a bunch of gawkers and sightseers like us, but on this Sunday there was also a triathalon so major streets were blocked. I visited parts of town I did not know existed. The Washington monument is always available, so it was bypassed, but we did make it to the FDR monument. This is always a great visit as his words etched in stone are as relative and inspiring today as they were 80+ years ago. We then went ... read more
