Me blogging.
DJ took this from his phone. Our Rough Route
Katie Yea I had written a ton and now it's gone, forgive me as I attempt to recreate it.
Blogger: Katie
Location: Bristol, VA at Courtyard by Marriot. THANK GOD.
Time of arrival at destination: 9:42pm a full 18 minutes before we'd planned to be here. Go us.
I did most of the driving today so I had a lot to think about. I kept a running list today of things I wanted to blog about. When driving I find that I pick out things that I think are interesting and I make some comment about them, so here goes with that. I'll be getting to that list in just a moment.
In regards to DJ's previous blog, I realize that I have a limited knowledge of popculture or cultural references. You should all know this by now. Also I've found that when with DJ and some of my closest friends, that I drop my censors and say whatever is on my mind. I think it gives me some of my charm. If you've ever experienced one of those moments, I think that you should feel privileged.
PS. I'm watching Mr. And Mrs. Smith on the
sling player right now so I can have something on in the background. Also. I am enjoying my Cacao Reserve chocolate bar by Hershey's, Milk chocolate with Hazelnuts. It's delicious. PS. Lissa! At Hershey today I saw a bunch of organic chocolate and I though of you. Basically I think of you when I see most organic things. 😊 Do you eat organic chocolate?
Now back to business.
Troutville - one random town we passed through. I found it perplexing, wondering if there were trout there instead of people or if they farmed trout there. According to Google, it was named after people named Trout. Not as exciting. I wish that there were fish there. Then I think the name would be more justified.
Blue Ridge Parkway - it intersects with I-81 several times so you don't have to travel the entire length of the mountains at 45mph or less through the scenic mountains. I think it could be fun for a jaunt but not for the entire thing when we all have places to go and people to see. Check out www.blueridgeparkway.org if you are interested in learning more.
Off in the distance for a
Sunset
Over Wyethville, VA while we saw this very tall mountain. As I passed it, southeast of Roanoke, VA, while DJ was on the phone with Andrea and potentially mid-blog, I wondered what mountain it was. I learned online that Roanoke calls itself "the only city with a mountain within its city limits.” Kinda cool. Roanoke also has the Skyline Roadway or Parkway which travels the whole length of the ridge of mountains through there. Another thing to put on my list when my destinations are flexible.
PS. over 100 species of birds are visible from there. Cool. Still not sure about the name of that mountain, but I think I'm ok with it.
We saw a beautiful sunset over the town of Wyethville, VA. IT was awesome. Around every corner was another cool view of it. Earlier in the day I was thinking that we wouldn't see the sunsets, or have to worry about driving into them because we were heading south, but we did see a beautiful sunset, it was so nice. Truth is, I am mesmerized by the sky. Almost always. I think it's amazing to see how many shapes and twists and turns it can take. Its one of the things that I love to just look at and imagine in. I don't always need to know the science behind it, like I enjoy knowing about other things, or the way that other things happen, because I tend to really enjoy that as well, being able to see something for the structure beneath it. But the sky I find fascinating. Particularly the night sky. That's what I look forward to the most right now about going to Montana. Big Sky Country. I've been told that I'll see more stars that I've ever imagined. I think that the first time I see it, I won't want to take my eyes off of it and I don't know if I'll be able to breathe. All things to look forward to.
Later on the ride, we saw what looked like an airport but tiny, close to the highway and on a slight incline. We then realized it was a tiny landing strip called Mountain Empire Airport, it was in a town called Groseclose, VA. Weird name. This landing strip was for tiny little planes, it was really neat. I really want to fly in a plane like that!
Last thing to note tonight is about cows. I really enjoyed seeing the cows on the side of the road. I would often shout “cow” or “moo” when I'd see them. Also for a while I noticed that all of the cows were black with the occasional black cow with a white head. It wasn't for a while that we saw the stereotypical white, black spotted cows. I really enjoyed the fields of what I called “diverse cows” which had white, brown and black cows in pretty even numbers all mingling together. For a while when we went thru the mountains above, we didn't see any cows, and I was excited when we saw them again. At least there were interesting things for me to look at on the side of the road. ALSO about cows, there were cows up near billboards where farmers had sold some of their land to build the billboards. It was hilarious.
Well, I really think that's all for tonight, hopefully I can get the map thing to work. Love you all. Thanks for your patience with this blog!
Tomorrow we plan to stop in Nashville for a few hours and spend the night in Memphis. So that should be great!
Miles to go... lots.
Time of blog: 11:27
PS the town we are staying in is the same exit that we stopped in on my way to Mississippi with my theatre friends for our service trip to rebuild the Katrina region back in March. We ate at the Perkins (its like a diner) across the street from here. SO WEIRD.
