TEXAS- has always been on my "have to see list" and now i get to spend three glorious nights in it, first pitstop in Texas was just outside Houston, today was a really long drive day so we didnt actually get to go into Houston itself but just drove passed the skyline in our little white van, none of us was too bothered though as we were all recovering from New Orleans and just wanted to get to the campsite and chill out. However just because we didn't do anything on this particular day does not mean that it wasnt exciting, oh no because it was on this day that the most random thing happened, im not sure if it actually happened but i was the chosen one, today is the day i got struck my lightening. now before i go on i will confess that only a couple of people actually believe that this is what happened so i will tell you the story and you can decide. so we had been at camp for a total of ten minutes and i was happily cutting up some onions for dinner when it started to rain soon to be followed by
raging thunder, it looked and felt that it was here to stay so we all quickly ran to get opur tents up on at least a little bit of dry ground. So i was dealing with the A frame while elise was trying to get the pegs in as quick as possible when i hear a crack and suddenly i m in pain and throw the poles to the ground to see that i have burnt the top of my fingers where i was holding on to the top. At first i couldn't explain it it wasnt until we were watching the lightening later on that i finally decided that is what happened to me. Apparently the odds of being hit by lightening are the same as winning the lottery, even though it is an exciting experience i cant help but wish that god chose the latter for me, but hey ho im a chosen one so i shall not complain. and for those doubters out there, (you know who you are), im willing to change my story only if you come up with a better explanation. that was about the excitement of the day however so we retired to
our tents so we could get an early start to our next destination San Antonio.
San Antonio is home of the Alamo, where a great battle took place hundreds of years ago. having been there im still not sure what the battle was about and why it left such an impact on America but it is where Davy Crockett fought, this shows my ignorance as until this day i believed Davy Crockett was a fictional character. So we had a wonder around and met up for lunch. We were meant to stay in San Antonio for the night but to be honest there wasn't much to do there so when Kyle suggested going to Austin instead we jumped at the chance. Austin is the capital of Texas and likes to think of itself as alternative, there are signs everywhere to keep Austin weird. It is also famous for its live music so tonight we hit the town on search for music but of first we had to sample some Texas bbq, it was so good but seriously massive, my dish alone could of fed my whole group, try as i might i couldn't even make a dent in it.
Davy Crockett
He is a real person you know So we headed off to watch a band, it wasn't to anyone musical taste but it was free to get in and after a while we were all getting quite into it plus the bar had a professional arm wrestling table where somehow we managed to get people to buy us a drink if we won or lost, drunk people are easy to fool i suppose. We had a brilliant night and headed back to the campsite.
Up and early the next morning to head to Del Rio, we arrived set up camp and decided to cross the border into Mexico for some good food and cheap beer. the food was amazing and we were drinking in a pub that has been in loads of famous movies but as i'm writing this after the fact im unable to think of any of them. we headed back over the border and luckily this time i had no problems with any border control and went back to camp all happy to have a new stamp on my passport. after listening to some more kenny chesney at kyle's insistence we all went to bed to put a end to our texas adventure.
Tomorrow yet another New State.
