I enjoyed San Antonio—Glenn, not so much. Friends had warned us of Texas’ unique qualities (read different from the rest of the continental US) Women have big hair, lots of jewelry, long red nails and men wear big hats, big belt buckles and cowboy boots. To illustrate, walking through the Rivercenter Mall I was approached by a woman who wanted to help me make my hair a bit more Texan—I resisted the temptation.

Glenn & I visited the historic Alamo. As an egotistical American I was surprised to learn that Glenn knows very little about the American War of Independence, or any subsequent American wars. I figured Australia hasn’t had any wars, why shouldn’t they learn our history—it’s much more interesting  So, I took it upon myself to share all that I remembered from my secondary history lessons. The general belief is that the Battle of the Alamo and the resultant executions at Goliad led to the victory at San Jacinto and then the Texan Revolution. A very broad account of history may find the Battle of the Alamo responsible for Texas joining the Union, the Mexican-American War & the resultant entry of California, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico

Glenn could appreciate this--it's a big, old, gun.
to the Union, which in turn led to a shift in the balance between the Yankees and Confederates during the civil war. I am always impressed by the many webs that make up our history; in a way you could say the battle of the Alamo was a factor in the conclusion of slavery in the US. I was touched to be walking on the grounds of such a significant historic site in American history.

All of this, however, was lost on Glenn. All he could appreciate was that the town seemed old.
