My husband was blown up in Iraq. He did two tours, in the infantry. Now he's medically retired, at the age of 33.
The injury made him old before his time, back ache, bum knee, creepy ringing in his ears, the forgetfulness of an Alzheimer’s patient. Then, the PTSD, the anxiety, depression, mood swings, a drinking problem to rival a great American author’s.
We’re lucky in a lot of ways. He came home. He’s not missing any pieces. Unless you count his humanity. I kid! Just saying, he’s not the same. No one should be, though, you know, after a war.
