Charming Charleston, SC

We had 4 days to take in Charleston, South Carolina and will provide you with the highlights here. For the most part we were lucky with the weather as it was even possible to wear shorts a couple of the days. We stayed in the Charles Inn (Best Western) in the historic district. This was a fine location for taking off on walks—something we did frequently. In fact, that is probably the best part about visiting Charleston, just taking the time to walk through the historic district and take in the houses. We decided not to pay the $$ for the historic tours around town or to Fort Sumpter (John had been here before) but there are ample opportunities for that if you like. There are many dinner places but if you happen to want to a decent breakfast head to Sweetwater Café. We wandered the streets of the entire historic district before discovering this place. Here are some of the simple things that we considered highlights:

• Just wandering through the streets south of Broad Street to see the houses—we spent a lot of time just walking through quiet streets in the historic district. The houses in the Battery area are also very impressive. Be sure to walk up the less traveled Murray Bvld. West of the Battery row too as there is about a ¾ of mile stretch with impressive house after house.
• The Road to Kiawah Island—We drove out to Kiawah Island one day and the best part was the road leading to the island with the giant oak trees with Spanish moss hanging over the road
• Kickin Chicken—Our favorite food destination located on King Street with tasty chicken prepared in all sorts of ways
• Swings at Waterfront Park—Make sure to walk out on the pier and take a relaxing swing
• Univ. of Charleston—It’s hard to believe this picturesque location is actually a college campus. Take time to grab an ice cream and sit out in the beautiful yard in front of the large building that was featured the The Patriot movie.
