In the attic
Jessica, Stephanie, and Katelyn sitting on the stairs to Kim's attic, showing off their insulation job. “Rise and Shine and oooooooooooooooooooooooooh that’s sore…” After stretching out our sore muscles, grabbing breakfast, and making our sack lunches we met with more wonderful people from the Pittsburgh Project. Mark and Courtney are a couple who work with youth programming and came to talk to us about their newest project of Urban Farming. Their Urban Farming project is a lot different from the farming some of us are used to and has a completely different set of challenges. They have several plots around the neighborhood where they grow vegetables and fruit to for the community. This helps provide cheaper, healthier foods, and gives the youth in the neighborhood a new experience that many of them have not had. In the future they hope to have some small livestock like chickens, and GOATS!!! (Katelyn was happy to hear that). Their discussion of taking care of our Earth led to some great discussion and debates that continued as each group headed out to their worksite.
After Mark and Courtney’s visit we split up to go to our sites. The team at Jim’s house, also known as Team Santa or Team 95 cent, spent a good part of the day on

We took care of some demolition projects in preparation for the new pipes and electric lines to be put in the next day. With rain in the forecast, we wanted to finish our roofing and window installation projects so we all worked as a team to strip old wood, tar the shingles, install the window, hang the trim, and paint the dormer. Note the amazing state of our tar covered sisters, Mallory and McKenzie (nothing a good deal of paint thinner and multiple showers can’t handle). The finished product on the roof looks great and we were very happy with our progress.
The team at Kim’s house were itching to get her roof problems fixing before it rained this evening. To start off the day Jessica, Stephanie and Katelyn returned to the attic to finish insulating. Scott, Ed, and Zan worked outside to build the frame to cover the holes in Kim’s roof. As it heated up outside the shingling operation began. Zan passed Jessica and Stephanie shingles who then handed them up to Scott who shingled away. With not much space on the scaffolding, Katelyn began work on our mission cross, and engaged Kim in

It was interesting to hear how her neighborhood has changed as some of the homes were torn down and the neighbors less close together. Towards the end of shingling Jessica and Zan cut the shingles for the cap of the roof. Katelyn and Jessica finished off the box by painting it white and the push to finish before the rain was done.
It was a GORGEOUS day outside today. The breeze kept those on the roofs cool enough and some of us got a little sunburned. Our evening was nice and relaxing with some free time. Supper was pancakes, bacon, and eggs! Amy and Mallory went to meet up with a friend for supper. Some of us took advantage of the free evening and went to bed early.
