Day 10:

Rest day in Portland. Washing, changing the shock absorber on Ian’s bike & some shopping cut out most of the day. Ubered downtown to a restaurant for dinner where we had the most amazing waiter. This guy looked just like my son Joel & was as enthusiastic & knowledgeable about the food on the menu as Joel is about music. He could describe every dish, the cooking process and herbs & spices used and the taste we could expect. In every case we couldn’t fault him. A great night.

Day 11:

Awoke to rain. We togged up with all our wet weather gear, up the road to gas up. By now it had stopped raining and it had warmed up. Jackets off, across town to encounter rain & colder temperatures as we got onto a freeway. Spray, cars & trucks doing 70mph not our thing so we took an early diversion onto secondary roads. Jackets back on and now we were on a winding sealed road through a forest besides a fast flowing stream – very scenic. By now the weather had cleared so we found some secondary roads varying between seal and gravel, narrow with bush growing right to the edge of the road. All too soon these roads ended and we came to the small mainly Indian town (First Nation) of Warm Springs (also warm temperatures so we all removed our wet gear).Lunch in an Indian store/café/second hand shop was very tasty & with great service. A market had been set up outside the store but having no room to carry a totem pole, we pressed on into the large busy town/city? of Bend.

Tomorrow we are on the iconic Trans American Trail
