waiting for Brian to get Nebby parts 11/24/2006 1:57 PM
Driving to Tulsa was difficult to say the least. We spent most of the day on state hi-ways leading us through small Kansas towns and villages. As I was driving we pulled into Fort Scott, Kansas to use the bathrooms and get something to drink. I found a convenience store in the old part of town and pulled into the driveway. Upon doing so the back end of the bus scrapped its back end on the pavement and broke the bowl of the filter between the tank and the engine, which was mounted under the cargo bay doors. We were empty of Vegoil so we didn’t notice it right away.
We drove for forever waiting to hit the interstate again. When we finally did hit it we received a call from the promoter to see where we were. Martin told him we were running behind and would be there as soon as possible. The promoter said that there had been a problem with another similar bands show the same night so they merged the shows and now there would be 6 bands instead of 4. On top of that the union sound engineer phoned 5 minutes

re-signing a poster he signed in 1997 before sound check and said that he wasn’t coming. This was looking to be a total cluster fuck. We didn’t feel so badly being late since it sounded as though they were having their own problems at the club.
Interstate was such a nice thing after the small roads we had been on previously. After only 20 minutes on the interstate we ran into the flashing lights of multiple cop cars ahead. They were blocking the route and sending all the traffic south on a different toll road. This added at least another half hour to the route. We located the club and started the load in. This club was a gay, leather bar and had trees inside making a canopy over the occupants, decorated with purple Christmas lights. The room was packed with the gear of 6 bands and we were tripping over each other getting set up.
We had a bit of a sound check and then the club ordered us food from a local Irish pub. Hanging out, we ran into a few acquaintances and talked about people we knew. I spoke with a guy that liked to hop trains and ride around the country,

Elizabeth and Billy and to a girl that wanted to be a sex therapist and talked about amputee porn. The show was the best one we’d had thus far. The crowd was decent sized and receptive. After the show Jesse, the promoter, took us to our hotel and got us situated. We talked a bit about the buildings downtown and about the zeppelin tethering pad atop one of the older ones.
In the morning or at noon rather, we checked out after some needed showers and went to a bar that Jesse worked at and had orange juice and discussed where we could get coffee and more oil. We found ourselves at a sushi bar with about 200 gallons of oil in the dumpster and readied ourselves to try this new filter Brian constructed. I noticed a good amount of oil leaking from below the cargo bay doors - the broken bowl from back in Kansas was discovered. Again Brian pulled up the internet and a list of filter suppliers in Tulsa. The filter was rare in that its primary use is in marine applications and being in Oklahoma things were not looking good. He actually found a place that had what

Random club people he needed and was better than the original filter. Early evening we were back at the sushi bar and Brian started to work on changing the new filter. Martin and Jesse went to an old dance hall from the 20’s where the Sex Pistols played on their final US tour and looked at a hole that Sid Vicious punched in the wall. I stayed behind to see if Brian would need help. He did need some help as we disconnected/connected anti-freeze lines and we both were covered in anti-freeze and oil. After the switch he hooked up the new bucket filter and turned on the pump. It pumped what had previously taken 4 hours in about 5 minutes. The draw back was that the pump was stronger than the bucket and collapsed it to the point where it would never return to its shape thus causing it to break the vacuum seal and disable it. We spent the better part of the next few days trying to figure out how to make a stronger bucket filter. We decided to try and pick up a water cooler that you take to ball games, from Target in Austin.

recording for the documentary of this all we went to a pre-Thanksgiving meal held at the house of the club owner. They had about 10 different types of Chinese food and beer for us. The photographer from the show was there and put a CD of the pictures from the show on the computer and we chatted and watched them roll by. At the end of the evening we were signing CDs, posters, and tickets of people involved with the show before we started out for Austin via Oklahoma City. Edward’s sister lives in Austin and was expecting us for Thanksgiving dinner the next evening so we had to make good time.
