November 9th- up at 4.30am to catch the tide - but the lurking crab traps which could snare our prop delayed the cast-off until daylight at 6am.
Last night we had dinner with another new group of cruisers - mostly Brits - all with fascinating stories - living aboard and seeing the world from their boat. Some have spent months ‘on the hard’ doing repairs and preparing for the next leg. Most are incredibly skilled at making do - finding an affordable solution - something we are working towards!
The first leg to Portsmouth VA (54 miles) took us 10 hours in perfect conditions. Jib up most of the way - reconditioned engine ticking over sweetly. Ship traffic on the Chesapeake and into Norfolk was light - no scary moments.
We opted for a marina at Mile 0 of the Intra-Coastal Waterway instead of anchoring in a maze of crap traps nearby. Had a nice walk up historic Water Street for a draught Yuengling (America’s oldest and best beer!) in a predominantly African/American bar where we shared our delight with Obama’s historic victory.

safe from snow
Love your photos - those huge ships are a bit intimidating! Hope you are enjoying some neat anchorages in the Chesapeake by now and out of reach of those monster ships. We are "enjoying" our first snowfall of the season so you are to be envied your warm location without snow. Take care, Yola and Garry
