This morning was a slow wake up with excitement to be building in yet another city that I love and means so much to me! We had breakfast upstairs where it was a bit cooler and of course had coffee! We then were ready to have our "butts in seats" of the cars at 7:30 like the leaders requested, however they were meeting and we got into the cars a few minutes later after a quick debrief about the local Habitat we would be working with today. Instead of building, we would be doing a demolition! Woot woot!
We arrived at the house and from the outside looking in, it looked like it was in decent enough shape. The site supervisor Trevor have us some history on affordable housing in the area--housing becoming more and more expensive and hard to come by as people continue to flock to Wilmington--mostly retirees and second homes people. This house in particular, though not the norm, was bought to be demo-ed because the property was cheap but worth the price and the house was in decent condition, but being demo-ed due to previously having a bad set up. So when we arrived there was
still floors, cables & wires, insulation, framing wood, and sheet rock around the windows that all had to be take down and out. We got to work and had a field day getting rid of stuff rather than building stuff. It was fun to see the process in verse!
I worked on taking out some nails and screws from the framing of the ceiling, as well as some wiring and light fixtures. Taking a few breaks due to the heat and constantly needing water, but pressing on and appreciating that we were working inside and out of the hot sun. I then moved on to removing some of the sheet rock from around the windows, and some of the volunteers guys chipped in to help as well. Then it was time to start destroying the floors! A few people got them started and then the rest of us started chipping in! We took a break from lunch and ate in the back of the house and sat on not-the-most-comfortable log to avoid getting ants in my pants. We ate turkey and cheese sandwiches with Cheetos inside of them, as well as oatmeal crème pies, Gatorade, and they gave us
After!!
That’s right! a nature valley bar as well. Then it was back to destroying floors! Once most of them were taken up, Jess and I went through the floor framing and started removing the insulation as NJ, Amanda,Sarah and others helped bag it up. With the dirt floor showing and the house well destroyed, we took a victory picture and loaded up the vans to head home.
Once we got back to the host, the shower shoe line cued up and as we waited I "rallied" some friends to help paint the trailer--finally! East Coast Greenway sign, Keys 2 Canada with hand prints, North is the Path, Share the Road, and Bike & Build were the themes of the different sides. I started the Greenway sign then delegated it to Sarah who is much more gifted in precision and Amanda who painted it well. I painted the Keys 2 Canada and everyone left their handprint, so then then I moved on to painting the side of the trailor K2C green in prep for the B&B side. I took a quick shower and then Kim Tulino showed up to catch up a bit! It was so so nice to see her and
catch up, especially since the last time I saw her was 8 years ago at Ben & Lindsay's wedding and lots has happened for both of us since then. I attempted to continue painting, however my B&B logo wheel turned out lopsided so I will be needing to re-do that :D
It was then time to get ready to head to the water for the beach picnic hosted by alum Austin from NC2SD16 on the lagoon. But first, we had to stop for coffee of course! Mikey, our Wilmingotn local, recommended a great coffee shop along the way where he knew the girls working there. I enjoyed a delicious Thai coffee latte and it was everything! I also order NJ a large iced latte and tried Sarahs Mexican latte, which was also delicious! When we arrived it was such a dream! Lots of food, some of his friends, drinks of all kinds, right on the water, complete with a hammock and unicorn float and a sunset! We ate, played frisbee, Ryan lost his Pit Vipers and after a thorough long search, Aiden managed to find 2/3 of them--with much joy and celebration--and the silliest goggles ever that had us
rolling with laughter--the pics still make me crack up every time! I enjoyed swinging in the hammock during the sunset while FaceTiming Sabrina and it was just perfect 😊) We then packed up and drove the 30 minutes back home to downtown Wilmington.
Though many had abandoned the basement on account of bugs, I stuck it out bc it was still much cooler down there. With our century ride tomorrow, everyone crashed and hope our little sleep would be enough to power through the long, hot day that lies ahead.
