Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Hatteras, North Carolina The day started with drizzly overcast weather - we were disappointed that our last day in this park would be canceled due to weather. And, since the day before was nearly perfect, we were kicking ourselves for not taking advantage of the good weather. After the rain let up, though, we took the dogs down to the beach and let them run. (Technically, they were on 'a six foot leash'. However, there was no human on the other end. I wonder how that would play out with a park ranger!). We did a bit of beach combing, and Joan picked up some more shells. Frisco Woods campground on North Carolina’s Outer Banks is quite a find. We’ve learned that staying on the bay side is great for sunsets and views. The beach outside our window was a haven for surfboarders and kite wind surfers. Most of our fellow campers are in the Outer Banks for the fishing. On this trip we focused on the southern part of the Banks - Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras, and Ocracoke. Buxton is home to a fabulous restaurant, Rusty’s Surf & Turf. Chef / Owner Rusty, a home town boy and a surfer brings a bit of Pacific Rim, Carrib, and Mexico to his menu. We would not have gone to this part of the Eastern U.S. had it not been for a fun rondevous with relatives once again, this time the Kology family (minus college student Heather), for 5 days relaxation at the deserted beaches while Brain and 'the boys' tried to catch the big winds with their kite sail boards. I understand it wasn't as great as they had hoped but they still went out everyday when the winds were high. William, Nan, Cole and I did a lot of walking on the beach and some game playing too. One day William and Cole, or was it Nan and Cole? drove north from where we stayed to visit the Wright Bros. National Memorial where these brothers took their first flights.
