Edit Blog Post
As I've mentioned before, even though I'm not doing any real traveling until September, I will be posting periodic blogs about other activities. Another recommended activity in the tri-state area is taking in a
baseball game - it is especially recommended if you're not from the US as it is America's pasttime! On Wednesday, I went to my first professional baseball game ever - actually my first baseball game in any form! The
Yankees were taking on the
Blue Jays in the Bronx.
The game started at 7, so my friends and I drove in to Yankee Stadium and after parking in one of the many lots available (yes, public transportation is highly suggested!), we walked under an overpass, through a tunnel and out by the stadium entrance. Once we had gone through security (no large bags, ladies!) and shown our tickets, it was time for the ever-important hunt for dinner. My friend recommended that we grab our food at the little food court downstairs before heading all the way to the top where our seats were. I must say, they do have a wider selection of food than the Devils do at their games! I was able to get a piece
of pizza, which was exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately, they decided not to give us any tops to our sodas - this is pretty common if you buy a bottle, because for a while, people were turning them into missiles and launching them at their hated officials. But my soda was in a cup, so no top made it very unwieldy! We did manage to go up all four escalators with no problem, and then we walked through the entrance to the top tier and the field spread out before us.
No, not because I was feeling emotional about the game, but because I have a serious fear of heights and these seats were HIGH. My friends went to locate our seats while I held on to the wall, and then came back to take my food and lead the way over. I made it and sat down, and managed to get my breathing back to normal fairly quickly. We had a fairly good view of the field, though the people looked more like ants, and I'm sure you won't be able to see the players' numbers in the pictures. We cheered the Yankees on as they were introduced
onto the field, and I kept checking with our resident Yankee fan to see who belonged to which number. The game got off to a rather slow start, with only one run from the Blue Jays in the first inning and no other runs until the bottom of the 8th. We entertained ourselves by eating our dinner and watching the food hawkers yell things like "fresh squeezed beer!" Our side of the stadium also started
the wave, which picked up speed and finally made its way all the way to the other side, followed by big cheers from our side. It was pretty entertaining!
We also made sure to get the all-important pretzel - every time I go to a hockey game, I love to get a hot pretzel, and my friend was right there with me on this one. She went down to get a couple, and came back with pieces to two and a half or three pretzels. The woman said she would only charge her for one pretzel, since they were in pieces, but when she paid for it, the pretzel lady gave her a hard time about tipping. So she ended up paying for two pretzels
anyway! They were a little bit too salty, as is usually the case, and somewhat stale, so next time we'll be getting the
cracker jacks and cotton candy!
Just as everyone was starting to blink sleep out of their eyes, the Yankees joined the game. If I was a baseball fan, I could probably tell you who scored the runs, what plays took place, where they really picked up on defense, but since I'm not, I won't. Once the action picked up though, the crowd was really into it and it was pretty exciting. And if you live in the tri-state area, you regularly see
Derek Jeter and
A-Rod on tv, so it was neat to actually get to see them play instead of just be interviewed! The game ended with a
6-1 Yankees score, and we only got a little bit lost in the Bronx on the way home. I'd say one of the best things about the game was getting a free Yankees' cap on the way in - so even though I'm not a true baseball fan, I can now fit it with the best of them!
Hmm, maybe I should sign up to go to the
US open...
