Mine and Stus last week together until I get back to England!!
Because we gave the car back in Atlantic City, we had to get a Greyhound bus up to New Yor. It only cost $22 each-bargain! The price of travel in England become more ridiculous with the more places I visit! The bus journey was smooth which was good and we landed right in the centre of New York near Times Square. Again, we booked a place with airbnb.com with a lady called Diana in Harlem. She sent us clear instructions how to get there and we found that the train system there is brilliant. A bit like the tube system in London. We finally made it to Dianas. who ha a lovely home. You can tell she really likes to look after it. e were really tired from our journey so had something to eat and went to bed.
The next morning, we were up suer early as Stu really wanted to watch the F1 racing on TV. He found a place that was 'suppossed' to be showing it, only to turn up and find it was shut! Oh well it got us out of bed at
least! We spent the day having a look around different famous places. Firstly, we went on the free ferry to Staten Island. Along the way, you could see the Statue of Liberty (again, so much smaller in real life!) It was a nice statue but we didnt realise you had to book months in advance if you wanted to actually go on to the island it is situated on so we just passed by.
Next, we went to the World Trade Centre memorial. The tickets to go inside were free. While we were lining up there was a cartoon story on the screen of a real man who lost his two sons in the disaster. What made the story even more sad was that it was one sons birthday that day we were visiting. The memorial is currently made up of two large squares that represent the two towers that were destroyed. The squares have water flowing down into the floor down below (thats not a great description, have a look at my photo!). Apparantly, when it is someone's birthday that dies there they put a rose into the hole in the names that are ingraved into the memorial.
I couldn´t see any roses so I hope they didn't forget the birthday of the guy I was listening about whilst lining up for my tickets. It was really windy while we walking around the memorials which meant every now and again the wind would blow and pick up some of the water and spray it everywhere. People were getting soaked!
We then decided to go for a nice drink in a bar nearby where we then decided to try our luck to see if we could get tickets for a broadway show that evening. We went to times square area and found a place called TKTS. Here they sell tickets for shows that day at discounted prices. We got tickets for Mmatilda with 30% off and our seats were right at the front. We had to run through the streets as our show was starting in 10 minutes! Quite hard on a saturday through Times Square! We made it with a few minutes to spare. The children in the production were fantastic. The cast were based on English people, yet all of the actors were American. This really annoyed us as their accents were not great! Apart from
the bad accents, we really enjoyed the show.
The next day, we decided to have a lazy morning and ent out a bit later. We decided to go to a place called Celsea and go for a walk on a disused rail line. Was a nice place to go to and we found a thai restaurant that sold very cheap food so we were happy! We then madeour way to the Empire State Building to have a look out from the viewing tower. It was very crowded up there but was nice to spot some of the uildings below that we hadn't seen yet. It isn´t somewhere where I would really recommend on going, you won't have missed much if you haven't been but I suppose it is just one of those historical places to go!
The next day we had a long walk around central park. The park is a lot bigger than I thought it would be with statues of different historical people dotted around. We watched people play base ball and on one teams shirts it said THE LATE SHOW so we wondered if these were people that worked on the
show. We saw lots of runners around the park which made me feel really unfit. I was running so much before I left England and now I do hardly anything. Need to get back into shape as soon as I get home! We didn´t do much else that day. I think because it was coming to the end of mine and Stu´´s time together we didn't want to be rushing around all of the time. We found a nice meatball shop where you could design your own meal. We really enjoyed that. Not as good a the Parisian style mac and cheese we had a few days before though!
Our last day together we did pretty much nothing. We had some southern style fried chicken from a popular place in Harlem and I just tried to prepare for the rest of my trip alone. The good thing about Stuart going home was that he could shed a few kg off my load and take some clotehs home with him!
I'm really going to miss Stuart over the next two months but I am really excited too about the journey in front of me. I think it
is going to be the most challenging, scariest but most enjoyable. There are so many things I want to see in the countries I am visiting! Hopefully I will have WIFI to keep you all updated.
Lots of love to you all xxx
