New York City, a long overdue roadtrip which I have finally got around to doing. It only took us a relatively short 6 hour drive to get there, plus some additional time for some rough food at a Friendlies on the way.
Our home for the week would be a 6 bed dorm supplied by 1291 Youth Hostel. $40 per person, per night, gave us a wonderful little Bachelor apartment with 3 bunk beds, a small kitchen, and our own private bathroom. Located not even a 5 minute walk from Central Park, Times Square, and 5th Avenue, this was too perfect a place.
I can't be bothered listing what we did day by day, so instead I will just point form it or something.
Times Square: We took the time to walk through this place quite often, especially at night. It truly represents all things American I think. Bold, big, bright, gaudy, etc, etc. I loved it! The shops around it are interesting to look through, but they are also all a rip off.
Central Park: A few of us went here for a picnic one day, it was great. We also went looking for John Lennons
Atlas
Out the front of the Rockefeller centre. memorial, got lost, and couldn't find it. But we did end up seeing a few other things including the boating pond and some cool bronze statues.
Coney Island: Damn I was sooooo looking forward to going to this place. But it rained and it wasn't open. I could have cried. But we took a look around anyway, had some great hotdogs at Nathans, strolled up the boardwalk (which was cool!), and tried our hand at batting in the batting cages that were thankfully open. If the place was open, I have to think it would rock, it seemed very cool! The Metro ride there wasn't so cool though, lots of somewhat rundown and rough looking neighbourhoods to be seen.
Bronx Zoo: A fantastic little zoo that was free to visit on the day we went. We made a donation anyway. Fun to walk around, cool animals to see, and everything. The Bronx was an interesting place to see too.
Broadway shows: We managed to see 2 shows while in NYC, both of which rocked! The Drowsy Chaperone we got tickets for online prior to leaving for about $35 each, and The Producers, which we scored tickets for
Batter Up!
At the Yankees game against the Marlins. $40 each at the TCKTS booth near Times Square. The seats we had were basically back row for both, but the theatres were small and the view was good, so with the price was paid, we did well. Both shows were very funny and I loved them.
Empire State Building: The Tallest building in NYC, and a fantastic view of the city. Pity it costs a whopping $16, but whatever, it was probably worth it anyway.
Battery Park: Gorgeous little park at the bottom of Manhatten island. Very peaceful and pretty, and a decent view of the Statue of Liberty.
Ground Zero: This is where the World Trade Center was located. Not much remains sadly, but there is a small memorial, and work is progressing at one rate or another. Worth a glance, but not much to see. Wall Street is nearby and worth a glance also, and a store called Century 21 is across the street and is absolutely incredibly for bargains.
NYC Metro: New York has a fantastic metro system that will get you pretty much anywhere you need to go. It's convenient, cheap, and safe (or it at least seemed so to me).
Carnegie Sandwich
A massive Pastrami on rye from Carngies Deli. For $24 I got a week of unlimited travel on it.
Yankees Game: Yankee Stadium is incredible, the atmosphere was great! 54000 people were at the game we attended against the Florida Marlins. No homeruns sadly, but the Yankees did win 6-5 in the end. It was a lot of fun watching the vendors selling beer, peanuts, and hotdogs. Especially the peanuts guys throwing those bags left right and centre at anyone who shouted for some, up to 50 feet away!
5th Ave and Madison Ave: We took a day for shopping and wandered there two streets for a good few hours. Lots of variety, and insane pricetags. We checked out Barneys and Saks also, classy places, but out of my pricerange, haha!
We also ventured through a bunch of little other sights/places like Little Italy (which is basically only Mulberry street now, sadly), Chinatown (which encapsulates little Italy), Grand Central Station (one hell of a nice train station), and lots of other places.
Umm, well....This is all I can think of for now. My brain is a little scattered right now, but I wanted to get this up here while I coud find the time.
Carnegie Sandwich again
Me attempting to eat it...and failing... I will hopefully be able to add more later and maybe improve of the writing of this all.
New York was awesome and I loved the experience of being there!
Cheers!
