Hot in the city!!
We came to NYC early in the morning.. The temperature was not what we were used to in Iceland, where we had spent 4 days freezing our rear off! The sun was shining, clear blue skies and the thermometre was clear red with app. 35C, NICE!!
But walking around trying to find the cheapest option to get into the city, with your backpack that weights more or less 20kg is not cool!
Anyways, we finally got on our sub, after had bumped into anything and everyone on our way.
It´s not hip and trendy walking around with a foldable map over the metrosystem, sweating like a pig and being yelled at "watch it", by the local crowd..
But, it´s definately an experience!!
We arrived at our neighbourhood - East Harlem, or as we found out - "Little Latin-America" Good for us, a great start for our following journey to the south.
Our Hostel "Central Park Studios" was ok, but a good thing that we´re not big in size! It was a small room with an AC that sounded like an jet-engine.. Jeez, but we got one anyways - and the following days we were glad for
this!
Our first day we wandered around the city, getting familiar with the metro, the streets, and surroundings around Manhattan. To my amusement I was the guide, and the one with sence of direction, Ha!
NYC is expensive, and as a backpacker and a girl not the best place to just walk around and "look".. So many neat shops. But the whole atmosphere of being in the city that never sleeps, is (almost) just as good!!
I love this place, but unfortunately Thomas didn´t agree to the same extent as me.
"Do these people think they´re in the wild" he said when we walked through central park.
It is a concrete jungle - that´s a fact, but ohh so much life!
Our second day we boarded a city bus tour, that gave us a view of down town. A quick tour, so we thought. Our guide, an eccentric borned and raised "Manhattener" did a thourogh job, and the tour took about 3 hours!!
On 4th of July, the weather got hotter. The Times stated that a heat-wave was on the rise, and so it was!
We trawled the streets during the day - sweating, searching for an new lense
to Thomas´camera. Found it, check! Returned to the hostel, wrong lense - uncheck! Back to the store, sweating some more!!!
By nighttimewe were worned out, but had to get our act together.. It was the 4th of July, and of course we were gonna see the fireworks by the River.
And oh my, what a firework!! Tons of people gathered around the area of Hudson River and Riverside Park. The show lasted (non stop) for about 20 min., and was spectacular.. The americans awed of amasement, they´re good at that!
We laughed when we heard somebody yelled "Oh snap"!! Haha..
When the show had finished, all the boats on the river started honking, I especially liked that!
The following days the weather got even hotter, and humid. No use wearing clothes with colour, if afraid of sweat stains.. But we´re not, we´re Vikings!!! Hehe..
The peak of hotness came on our last day, it was said to be the hottest day in NYC in 9 years, over 100F, which we think is app. 37C. But, with the humidity and concrete, dust, noise, no wind and skyline - Ahhh!!!
On our last day we met up with Steinar (a colleague
of Thomas) , Anita his fiancè and her son Mads.
We gathered at an Irish bar, drank some beer (some more than others) and watched a fotball match.
After that we met up with Martha, a friend of Thomas he met on his last journey through South America. Very nice girl, who we´ve invited to come to Norway next year - hope you do Martha!!
We´ve actually saved alot of money by using the metro, but at our departure we had to "bite in the sour apple" and take a taxi.. We had to leave the hostel at 3am.
Not bad price though, 50$.
When arriving at the airport we could do nothing but sigh.. These people we where travelling with, on Copa Airline, well it seemed like they were the ones that was gonna be away for 6 months!! 6-7 suitcases (big ones) stacked on top of each trolley..
Oh, this was gonna take time.. And so it did!
But, we arrived in Panama as scheduled - unfortunately.. We had 10 hours of waiting before our next and last flight on this trip - to Rio de Janeiro!!!
Hasta proxima amigos
