Olana State Historic Site was founded by the 19th century Hudson River School painter, Frederick Church. The State of New York has recently dredged the pond that Church built and thinned out the vegetation, making it look more like the way Church designed the estate. Currently there is work going on at the house, so it is closed for tours. The place is quite scenic, however, and is worth the approximately 2-hour drive from New York City to visit.
