We'd been planning our trip (sort of) for months, but it still seemed that departure day came upon us suddenly. We had been shooting for Thursday Feb 14, but we got a pretty heavy snowfall on the 13th, and we needed some time to dig out. Looking at the weather forecasts for the cities along our route, the next likely day was Saturday the 16th. So Friday was spent doing the final packing, and then hooking up the rig. All went well until the light check -- no taillights on the trailer -- boo! It was by that time starting to get dark, and it was very cold, I had no heart for slithering under the truck with a volt meter to diagnose our troubles. So we decided to wait till morning to figure it out, ... read more

When it comes to exploring my own backyard, I consider myself rather lucky. I have the good fortune of living on Lake Ontario, which means my backyard is full of adorable little water-loving towns like Alexandria Bay. First things first....everyone around here refers to the place as Alex Bay, or even A-Bay. I seldom hear it called by it's full name. It's kinda like the J-Lo of small, upstate NY towns in that way. It is also the kind of place you only go in the summer. Winters are brutal up here, and many of us hibernate like the bears. In the summer months, we all get outdoors as much as possible, trying to eke out as much sun as we can during our way-too-short season. Boldt Castle was built by George Boldt between 1900 and 1904 on an island in the middle of the St. Lawrence River. When his wife died unexpectedly in 1904, work was stopped and never completed. Unlike the tours I took in Newport, RI, Boldt Castle was unguided and even allowed access to the unfinished areas. Also unlike the Newport tours, pictures were allowed. In addition to the main house I also toured ... read more

Geo: 44.3358, -75.9181Woke up to another beautiful morning along the banks of Lake Ontario and took a 60 mile leisurely trip along the Seaway Trail. We stopped in Tibbetts Point Lighthouse at Cape Vincent, then went on to Alexandria Bay along the St. Lawrence River. We did the 1 hour tourist boat ride to Boldt Castle and "Millionaires Row" to see the insane houses on the private islands. Our campground was really nice, right on the bank of the St. Lawrence River. There was no electric or water hookup at the sites, but we can "rough it" for 1 night. We rode our bikes into the harbor from the campground and locked them up at the dock. When we returned, we could not open the combination lock; something obviously got hosed. So, I asked a cop if he ... read more
