Texas Trip Day 14 Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument, White Sands National Park

The highlights of today were critter sightings and White Sands National Park, where we got to see a glorious sunset amid a fascinating and unusual ecosystem and geology. Another unforgettable day!

At the Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, where we stopped for lunch, we saw a bobcat! Today we also saw, but were unable to snap a picture of, a northern harrier and a roadrunner.

There were lots of birds at the Refuge, complete with blinds and platforms with spotting scopes to watch for them. It was pretty interesting!

Along with autumnal beauty.

Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument was our next stop.

We got to see more mountain vistas

And dramatic rock outcroppings.

Our final stop of the day was White Sands National Park

The dunes just rise out of the prairie abruptly along an astonishingly distinct line.

And once again, the camera just does not capture how vast and beautiful it is.

There is a dot in the middle of this picture that is Jamie!

The steep slopes here are surprisingly firm and stable, and the gypsum sand has a texture completely different than beach sand, which is mostly quartz.

And we ended our day with a glorious sunset.
