Mom: Scheduled our travels so we had a full day in Albuquerque to rest. We're about halfway through our trip now. Albuquerque is a beautiful city nestled in the Sandia Mountains. I could totally live here. We got a real estate magazine! We started the day with the free hotel breakfast (of course) then decided to do the tram ride to the top of the mountain. Little did we know, we timed our visit right during the annual hot air balloon festival, which is a big thing here. I caught a pic (see pics) of a balloon, but it was far away, and the pic is really bad. We had a great drive to the National Park at the base of the Sandia Mountains. Unfortunately, because of the balloon festival crowds, the wait to ride the tram was about 2 hours, so we backed out. While there, though, we caught great pics of beautiful plants and decided to take a hike at the base of the mountain. We were not deterred by the signs that said Cougar Country and Bear Country. I'm becoming a fan of hiking, but I'll be honest -- this one kicked my butt! It was more like
rock climbing than hiking. Justin absolutely LOVED it and was parkouring all over the rocks. My proudest achievement was finishing without falling (can you believe it, Donna and Martha??).
Coming off the mountains, we saw buffalo -- Tatonka. Sadly, not in the wild, but behind a fence. But we stopped to get pics. Came back to Albuquerque and went through the Old Town which is filled with cute little shops and restaurants. Found a fabulous authentic Mexican restaurant called Little Anita's and figured it was 5:00 somewhere, so treated myself to perhaps the best Margarita I've ever had. We enjoyed fresh guacamole and quesadillas. Back to the hotel for a little chill time, then I was feeling guilty, so went for a sunset run followed by Happy Hour and dinner. We then went to view the Harvest moon and came back to work a little while Justin watched some football. We leave tomorrow for a roughly 4-hour drive to Amarillo, Texas where we booked a cute little Airbnb. I still have to book our stays in Okla City and Memphis -- torn between Airbnbs, which I love! Or Hilton, to get the points. And free breakfast. We'll see... So
far we've done about 50/50. Excited to see Northern Texas and what the next phase of this trip holds.
Justin: We took a morning drive up to the mountain to ride the tram. We changed our minds because of the line and did what I would call a very advanced hike. I liked that part a lot! It wasn't a regular hike -- it was lots of rock climbing and jumping. It was fun(ny) watching Mom climb the rocks. Then driving back down we saw some buffalo, which I've never seen before, so we stopped to get pictures. Then we had a fabulous Mexican lunch and chilled for a while then had dinner. I love the style of houses here! But the best part of the day was the hike. I'm excited to see Amarillo tomorrow.
