The Manasquan Reservoir has been my home away from home as long as I've been in Jersey. I mean I've been working there for far to long/not long enough! Every year there is a race held in the beginning of fall and every year I am grateful that I'm not working that day due to the large crowds. This year is different though, this year I am a runner! The idea of running five miles in the past would have been dreadful, a cruel form of torture, but this year all I can think about is that the weekend is long run time so should I do two laps? Despite working there and being a runner I never actually run at the reservoir, I've done it perhaps twice and what I do know is that one ... read more

A short narrative I wrote about the squirrels at the canyon. The Eighth Wonder There is the old adage that says “big things come in small packages.” I’m not quite sure who said this but it could possibly have been my mother. More than likely, I probably heard it years ago on an episode of The Brady Bunch. It was the one where Bobby was hung up about being short and gets stuck in a Sam’s meat locker with Greg. Fortunately he is small enough to squeeze through the glass window and save the day. Who would have expected this bit of wisdom to play itself out at one of the most beautiful places on earth. The Grand Canyon! A multitude full of words comes to mind when you think of The Grand Canyon. Breathtaking, life ... read more

I attached a video from Barbados-- hope you enjoy!! The long dreary days of New Jersey are coming to an end for me this weekend! On Sunday, I'm flying down first class to Costa Rica to visit my favorite family in the world! I'm so excited to escape the cold and warm up my bones again. I'll be gone for a week, missing my first week at school, but it will be so worth it! Just have some last minute packing to do, I haven't used my surfboards since Barbados so they're all set. Tropical tube time awaits! After Costa, my agenda includes a NJ girl surf trip to Puerto Rico in March!, possibly Florida for a weekend in April!, and (fingers crossed) PERU in May! I'll be sure to post a blog after CR, until ... read more

I've moved on to the next stage of the application process! Things have been a little hectic around here as I get ready to depart for a fine adventure halfway around the globe. I finally finished my TEFL certification. I should be receiving my certificate in the mail sometime soon. I have also been mailed the material for the other, "bonus" certificate that Kate and I got when we signed to get our TEFL certificate-- the Certificate for Teaching English to Young Learners. Fitting, considering this is exactly what I will be doing when I complete training after touching down in Korea on November 27th. I received my visa code earlier this week-- it was much sooner than CDL had expected. Because of this, Ben, my contact at CDL, told me that my school wanted me ... read more

I've reached a bit of a block as far as it comes to writing my NaNoWriMo novel (November is National Novel Writing Month, to those of you who don't know), so I figure that I might as well start my travel blog. Let's start at the beginning: my senior year of college. Last October, my awesome roomate Kate ( Kate in Africa for those of you who don't know her) was scouring the internet for different travel opportunities, volunteer work, and jobs. We discussed some of the things she had found on a nice brisk walk to the local Giant Eagle. Among some of the options she rattled off, she mentioned seeing a post about teaching English in South Korea. It piqued my interest. I love kids, I love English-- and hey, let's be honest, the ... read more

Nov 3. Atlantic Highlands Municipal Harbor, NJ We are still in NJ protected by the Sandy Hook and watching Noel. Vitto doubled up on the lines. He adjusted the fenders as the winds were getting stronger. We felt Noel’s outer edge stronger winds in the afternoon, the waves were going over the breaker that protects the marina. The sailboats moored outside the marina were swinging back and forward. We thought one of them was going to break loose. Fortunately the hurricane gusts weren’t accompanied by any rain. So it didn’t feel so bad. Ximena got out of the boat for a photo walk and did laundry. After supper she ran to the movies to watch “into the wild”. Vitto did more maintenance on the boat. more pics ... read more

I find it interesting that airports have become part of corporate america. I'm sitting hear waiting for my flight to San Juan and there is an hour delay. This is the first time I have flown out of Newark Airport in a very long time. Just observing and seeing how technology and society have impacted our culture at the airports is amazing. Looking around its like rush hour in New York, Philadelphia and any other major metropolitan area. Corporate America has changed the airports of yesterday. Have made them into strip malls, with retail stores, fastfood chains, spas, private membership clubs, and much more. It all about rush hour and the impatient of society, the technology at theses places ensure that everything is out timely and precisley just like in strip malls and any other corporate ... read more

Day 3: April 8 - Red Bank, New Jersey Accommodation: Manhattan Inn Hostel What I didn’t realise when I booked my hostel was that New York’s Penn Station was only a few blocks away so I booked it well! My plan today was to catch a train to New Jersey, and I wanted to see a bit of America outside the big city as well as a few Kevin-Smith-related places. Kevin Smith , for those who don’t know, is a writer and director and producer and actor who started off with a very low budget movie named Clerks, which was full of twisted humour, and gradually became more and more popular with his unique brand of humour spawning 5 more movies and a cult following, of which I am also a part. Anyway, the train ride ... read more
