Well, the Garmin thingy has named me "Recalculating, when it is safe, do a U turn", which is a strange name I think? So I call her Helen, as it pays to do what she suggests. Drove from Banff south to the US/Canadian border, which I virtually drove through with hardly a stop. Don't understand that, but wasn't about to complain. Then into Glacier National Park, which is in northern Montana. It is well named, that's for sure, as is the village of Many Glacier. It was quite a drive, but I have got the hang of the left hand drive, and the roads are very safe. So, no problem to get along at 120km, as everyone else does. At the end of our Crypt Lake hike, a fellow hiker came down with his hiking poles and after talking with him we realized that they could be quite helpful. As we discovered, they allow you to use your arms to take some of the strain off your legs. This is useful both in ascent and in descent, sparing muscles going up and knees coming down. So we bought collapsible hiking poles before attempting our next hike. Today's goal: Grinnell Glacier. We had done this hike many years ago with the kids, and it was one of the most beautiful things I had seen, so we wanted to repeat the experience. On our previous experience, Clint was ten and Ashley eleven. When we finished the hike, a woman was sitting alone in the boat back to ... read more

Day 10 Glacier National Park Now that we have our “warm-up” hike under our belts its time to head out for something more demanding. We talked to a number of people for hike recommendations. Our waitress at the Glacier Lodge said she prefers the Many Glacier area when she hikes. The ranger at the visitors center in West Glacier suggested a few but seemed to like the hike to Iceberg Lake, which just so happens to be in the Many Glacier area of the park. It was five miles up and along a mountain side to a beautiful lake. A ten mile hike is a piece of cake right? Both of us have done running (jogging/walking) races longer than that, so, we figured it shouldn’t be much of a problem - we can do this! Let ... read more

Many Glacier Inn, Glacier National Park Thursday September 3, 2009 Thursday Karen and I pack up and again head over the “Road to The Sun” to the town of St. Mary on eastern entrance of the park. This side of the park is the Blackfoot Native American Reservation. After a great bowl of beef chili and a slice of pie at the Park Café we head north through to the town of Babb and the eastern and only entrance to the Many Glaciers area of the park. Many Glacier Hotel is another hundred-year old inn that was built for tourist by the Great Northern Railroad when the park first opened. The hotel is now owned by the Park Service and operated by the same private vender as the McDonald Lodge. This large two hundred twenty-room hotel ... read more
