Another beautiful day here along the North Shore of Lake Superior. 3:35 came early and the best photo op seemed to be as we were driving to Gooseberry Falls State Park about 40 minutes BEFORE sunrise. The lake was awash in the pastel colors you see before sunrise. But there were no overlooks to stop and capture that moment. We spent a little over an hour along the lake shore during sunrise and then went up along the falls for another couple of hours. The time just flew by. On the way back into town, one of our classmates (who lives here in Two Harbors) took two of us to a Pileated Woodpecker’s nest. What a cool experience. I saw two babies (I believe they are called fledglings as they are about to fly). I ... read more

Hello from the North Shore of Lake Superior. What a glorious day today. After the rain on Monday, Tuesday dawned sunny and 60 degrees. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky as we departed Story City, IA. The countryside is absolutely beautiful. The crystal blue sky contrasted with the dark rich green of corn as far as the eyes could see. Dotted along the corn, soybeans, and wheat fields were farmhouses and barns decked out in their red and white splendor. Silos would appear on the horizon as silent sentinels standing watch. I also passed by 3 or 4 wind farms. As we headed north the winds picked up considerably. The sky remained a rich blue with occasional streaks of icy cirrus clouds and later puffy cotton like clouds rolled by. The wind really rocked ... read more

I had a laid back day and did a little sightseeing. I first went down to the harbor and saw a cargo ship being loaded. While driving through town, a deer came walking around the corner of the street on the sidewalk. Of course my camera was in the back of the Jeep! I turned around and captured her but not with houses in the background. I then drove up to Gooseberry Falls (where we are going for sunrise tomorrow along the lake and then the falls later) and to Split Rock Lighthouse - probably the most photographed location on the North Shore. The beginning of the workshop was good, but a 4:15 departure tomorrow for sunrise will be early so I’m going to upload this and call it a night. ... read more

Start Odometer: 31762 Weather: Clear and warm, with some wind. After a quick snack of yoghurt and an apple, I had a coffee with Larry, packed and was underway by 9:15am. My goal was to reach Duluth by mid-afternoon. The road immediately entered into heavy forest again, and as it was still early I kept my eye out for animals. Sure enough, a doe popped out the woods just up the road. I braked to a crawl and sounded my horn to get her to make a decison. She bolted across the road, but they hardly ever travel by themselves, so I waited. Within a couple of seconds a little fawn ran out of the tall grass and raced across the road as fast as its little legs would go. I felt pleased with my defensive ... read more

So, my friend Audra and I decided to quickly escape to the city of Duluth in Minnesota. No, it doesn't sound very interesting but then again, we are fans of the quirky. Recently on our travels we found the Stump Fence Capitol of the World. Who would know that over turned tree stumps could cause such a commotion. Anyway, it was the last day before we headed back to school and I had been wanting to show her this city for while. (I had been there before for work.) One of the first places we stopped was an Irish pub but since it was about 10:30AM there on a Sunday we felt a wee bit shameful and couldn't bring ourselves to belly up to the bar. So we continued a walk down one of the main ... read more
