Day 13 – July 9th We awoke to fog as heavy as or perhaps heavier than we had in Duluth; we couldn’t see much out our hotel window. We thought the weather might cause us to change our plans, but we decided to give it a shot. After a breakfast of self-made waffles in the hotel’s breakfast room we fired up the faithful Caravan and headed south on I-75 for about 50 miles through national, state, and privately owned forests and marshlands. In about an hour we reached our destination, St. Ignace, MI. St. Ignace is a town of about 2,400 people and the county seat of Mackinac County. It also hosts the northern terminus of the Mackinac Bridge. This bridge is worthy of so many superlatives that I can’t lis... read more

Day 12 - July 8, 2013 Today’s journey takes us from Duluth through the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan, skipping along the southern edge of Lake Superior and into Sault Ste. Marie. For the most part, the highway was two lane with occasional passing lanes added. It wasn’t as bad as it sounds since traffic is minimal, albeit much heavier now than five or six months from now. The landscape is rolling with both lakes and higher mountains visible through the conifer forests that line the road. We don’t mind driving long distances so sitting in the car watching the countryside pass our windows is a pleasure. However, we always make it a habit to stop and do something to get our muscles moving. We look forward to it and doctors ... read more

We visited Sault Ste. Marie and the Soo Locks on a Fourth of July weekend in 2007. The bonus was the annual Fourth of July parade. Actually this spur of the moment surprise happened to us again over Labor Day weekend. While driving back from Traverse City, Michigan we were detoured off the main road in a small town due to a parade. Rather than continue, we took advantage, removed our chairs, and enjoyed an impromptu, at least for us, parade. What fun! Well, back to the Soo Locks. The Soo Locks tours depart from two docks that are very close to each other. There are multiple departure times that easily accommodate everyone’s schedule. Since it was July, we dressed for summer. Upon arriving, however, everyone had jackets and seemed dressed for fall. Somehow we had ... read more

Now that the wedding was over, it was time to start our long trip home back to Sandpoint, Idaho. On Sunday morning, we had our traditional “goodbye meal” breakfast with Mom and Dad Matteson, and Dale and Gail at Callahan’s in Portage, Michigan. After saying our goodbyes, we made our way to our hotel in Traverse City, Michigan. True to her word, Kathy did not have anymore Coldwater Creek stores to stop at for the rest of the trip. Instead, she decided to stop at select casinos along our way home. The first was the Little River Casino in Manistee, Michigan. After playing for only a few minutes, Kathy found the smoke in the casino too much for her to handle. When we arrived at our hotel, while unpacking our truck, we were greeted by two ... read more
