I wasn't able to reserve a campsite at Sleeping Bear Dunes last fall (they must fill up quickly!), so we booked a site at Traverse City KOA Holiday in Buckley, Michigan. It's nearly an hour from Sleeping Bear, but it ended up being a great fit for us. The KOA was well run and had plenty of family activities. That meant we could "rough it" when we wanted, but we could still do things like family movie nights, swim in the pool, and play giant chess games. On Friday, we decided to set out for the dunes. My friend Mona was staying nearby with some family, so she and the kids met us at Glen Haven beach. On our way there, we stopped at Glen Lake picnic area to eat our sandwiches and enjoy a nice ... read more

The Villages, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Empire, Michigan If Monday was a day with Nature, yesterday we absorbed Culture. There are two ‘settlement’ villages in the park that are restorations of communities that existed starting in the 1800s. Geo: 44.8975, -85.9853Saint Ignace is on the UP where theMackinac suspension bridge which spans the Straits of Mackinac to connect the upper and lower peninsula is. It crosses the body of water that connects Lake Michigan to Lake Huron. We spent Friday night in Saint Ignace at a neat old hotel called the Boardwalk Inn. The inn was just across the street from the city's boardwalk which followed the water front along the shore of Lake Huron. We arrived fairly early and after checking in and needing to “get our miles in,” we decided to walk along the boardwalk. The upper end of the boardwalk starts at an old chapel, now a museum, where the body of Father Marquette is buried. Father Marquette was a French Catholicmissionary to the Native Americans in the early days of ... read more
