Day1 - Boston Preview A red-eye flight through Cincinnati arrived in Boston at 9:30am. Couldn’t sleep well on the airplane but was ready to hit up Boston. I’ve been to Boston twice but I didn’t remember much... Mingji and I met up at the airport T station. He took me to Aquarium station to kickoff the visit with the world’s famous Quincy Market. It was more like he wanted to get it over with it 😊 We walked through it in 2min and headed toward Charlestown. Destination: Figs, Todd English’s gourmet pizzeria.
We’re all about efficiency. On the way to Charlestown, we managed to kickoff the Italian sweets indulgence at Maria’s. Good stuff. Figs in Charlestown was tucked away in a nice quiet neighborhood and it was hard to spot. Luckily, there was no crazy lunch crowd. Loved the super-thin crust!! Toppings were interesting too…fig/prosciutto, ham/asparagus etc. etc. After lunch, we headed back to downtown via Monument Square. In Beacon Hill area, we saw Make Way for the Ducklings sculpture in the Public Gardens. It was nicer than I imagined 😄 The next destination was Acorn St, the best spot in Boston! I found this in my guide book. This
super narrow street stretches ~100yrds, but how beautiful!! I was in awe, lol. Just when we got to Newberry St, it started pouring. We ran to Espresso Royale (Ann Arbor nostalgia 😄). But everyone had the same idea under the t-storm and we couldn’t find any seat. So we took refuge at the Prudential mall until the rain calmed down.
The dinner plan was at the famous Giacomo’s in North End. It’s a small place, hustling bustling with crammed tables, wait staff, and people lined up outside. Wait was 30-40min…not bad. I had lobster ravioli and Mingji had pumpkin tortellini. They were both tasty. The pumpkin one was もちもちっとしてて何とも言えない・・・
Day2 - Cape Cod Stuffing ~week worth of food the day before, we were ready for more action. Took 5:30am T to airport to pick up a car for the day. The weather forecast for Boston and Cape Cod: t-storm, ahhh!! In any case, we sailed down south. We reached Plymouth ~7:30. By then, the sun started to peak through the cloud. We got a glimpse of the Plymouth Rock, which was under the construction barricade, and MayflowerII.
Continuing on south, we reached the 1st stopping point in
Cape Cod, Hyannis. Then headed to Catham, which is the south-east point of the cape. Chatham had a nice sandy beach. The weather was on our side too. From Catham, we made 2 stops along the national seashore, at Marconi and Cape Cod Light. The weather couldn’t have been better. It was even an ice-cream-weather and dowsed on ice cream before 11am.
We made it to the tip at Provincetown ~2pm and we were caped-out by then. We decided to go back to Boston via Providence, RI. That’s when our luck ran out. We saw a huge mean dark cloud ahead near Providence. Underneath was lightening and pouring rain. We made it to the city but because we didn’t know the way around Providence and the road led to the freeway, we literally passed by it and headed back to Boston.
After returning a car, we went to Legal Seafood for dinner. Since it was still raining in Boston, we went to the one in the mall. Horrible waiter! In any case, we wrapped up the day with Boston Cream Pie at Mike’s.
Day3 - Harbor Islands & Harvard The agenda for today was to visit Harbor
Line at Giacomo's
We're almost there...like 30min... Islands. But first thing first, I had to sample Flour’s sticky bun. I guess the sticky bun runs out in the morning so I was determined to be there before 9am. I was glad. Flour was a really cute bakery with accessible pastries as well as intricate cakes. While we enjoyed tender and humbly sweet sticky bun, we missed the ferry by 5min!! We took the next ferry out to Georges Island. Georges Island has room for the fort. I think people picnic there or take the inter-island ferry to go camping. The islands looked like it would be a nice place to go camping! Again, we lucked out on the weather. It was a gorgeous day with cloud adding characters to the sky. We took the inter-island ferry to Bumpkin Island. The island is tiny and a trail took us all around the island.
In the evening, we visited Harvard. I got a glimpse of the Hogwart’s dining hall. We couldn’t find Toscanini’s though…transformed to JP Licks?!?! We caught the sunset on the bridge and saw a few dances from the local tango group, gathering for “tango under the moonlight”.
Although we didn’t get Toscanini’s, we redeemed
ourselves by getting gelato at Gelateria in North end. This was our 3rd night-in-a-row visit to the little-I. This time, we had cheesecake and lobster tail! Lobster tail is this humongous crispy shell with cannoli filling inside. It’s rich to the 10th degree.
Day4 - Cape Ann We’d conquered south & east shores and it was time for us to explore the north. We took the first train out to Gloucester. By the time we hit up the Fisherman’s monument, we had just enough time to head back to the train station. The next train was going to be a few hours later. To be honest, I didn’t know what Gorton’s was but since Mingji was so excited, we decided to stick around Gloucester until the next train, he he 😊
The next destination: Rockport. Rockport was nothing like Gloucester. There were more boats, scenic and cute shops all-around. Of course, we (or I) couldn’t go through a warm humid day without a cup of ice cream 😄
On the train back to Boston, t-storm started again. I was happy though because t-storm hit us only during the evening. Anyhow, once again, we made our way to
Plymouth Rock
This is the best shot of the rock. Its house is under construction... North End for Regina’s pizza. Like Giacomo’s, this is anothere stand-in-line-outside eatery. After good pizza slices, we headed to Modern pastry. They are like Mike’s archrival. Lines go out the door at both places way past 10pm - madness!! I had this cake soaked with rum and strega, yum!!
Good times…lots of good food and sweets! Hitched a cab at 4am to head back to the daily grinds…
