Greetings from Maine! Sorry that I haven't blogged in a few days! We've either been too busy or haven't had internet access. I have a lot to share, though and some great pictures as well!
On Tuesday, we drove into Maine to see a cloud of mist and haze. We kept telling the girls that it was beautiful, but it was hard for them to believe us because they couldn't see much of the harbor. That night, we pulled into Acadia National Park and camped at Blackwoods Campground. Needless to say, it was raining and Tony and I were completely over all of the "wetness"!
Wednesday morning, we drove to a hiking trail called Bubble Rock. Maddie and Tony had heard about it the night before at a park ranger geology talk. The rock was left on the ledge when a glacier melted and it has been just hanging there teetering ever since. The rock, known as an erratic, was carried from Bangor which is about fifty miles away. The hike was wonderful and Bubble Rock was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen! Wait until you see the pics - especially the one of Maddie creeping
over the edge to look down! After the hike, we drove into town to do some shopping in Bar Harbor. Julia couldn't wait to buy some "junky-junk"! We allowed each of them one souvenir. They both chose stuffed animals. While in town, we stoped for ice cream. We almost ordered vanilla ice cream with chunks of buttered lobster, but the thought of it wasn't very appetizing! Tony did buy a cool camping hammock (looks like it's made out of parachute material and can hold up to 400 pounds) and I bought a nice ornament with Humpback whales on it. We did try to drive up Cadillac Mountain to see all of the neighboring islands, but it was so foggy that we couldnt' see anything - AGAIN! We were pretty disappointed! On our way to our bed and breakfast, Tony spotted the Delaware plate and I saw the Washington DC plate. Yahoo!! We were so happy to arrive at our B&B! Comfy beds and large, soft white towels! (You know that Tony only allows us to use these itsy bitsy blue pack towels that sort of feel like sandpaper while we're are camping because regular towels would 'take up too much
space and would never dry'!!) We also discovered that one of the inn keepers is a graduate of Miami University. Go Redskins!! She'd never heard of the Miami Redhawks! The house was built in 1884 and is absoultely beautiful! Maddie and Julia were secretly hoping that the house was haunted, but they haven't heard any spooky sounds yet. The girls have their own room off of ours. They LOVE closing the french doors and getting crazy in there together. Tony and I just crack up listening to them! The breakfast here is wonderful! Maddie and I can't get enough and we enjoy playing games in the living room at night together while we drink hot chocolate! We did visit Seawall last night to get close to the ocean. The rocks were so slippery and poor Maddie slipped and fell on her rear. She's still pretty sore, so we think that she might have bruised her tail bone!
Today, was our big hiking day! We drove to the light house in Bass Harbor and hiked around it on the rocks. Julia was in rock heaven and we couldn't get her to leave! Then, we took a hike to the Ship
Harbor and the girls were able to hold baby crabs from a tide pool. After stopping for lunch in town, we stopped to look at some really nice oil paintings from a local artist and then decided to try driving up to Cadillac Mountain one more time. This visit, we were NOT disappointed! The sky was clear and the view from the top was amazing! We were able to see Mt. Katahdin which is the mountain at the end of the Appalachian Trail. We were also able to see Bar Harbor down below. Tony also saw a North Dakota plate, so now we only need to find Idaho and South Dakota! Yippee! We ended our day by relaxing at Sand Beach where the girls could run and play in the FRIGID water! Tony and I were able to catch a few zzzzs on our plastic table cloth that we were using as our beach blanket! The girls found a huge hole dug in the sand that they spent a lot of time playing in. At exactly 4:15 PM - THE SUN CAME OUT AND SHONE DOWN ON THE DUNNS! Halleluiah!!! It felt so good that we didn't want to leave!
We did drive to Thunder Hole afterwards where the waves crash into the rocks and make a lound thunder boom. The girls loved it and wouldn't leave until we heard a big crash!
Tomorrow is our last day in Maine! Our plan is to go out on a lobster boat in the morning and then go whale watching in the afternoon. We pray that the weather is nice and sunny! Then, the Dunns are packing it up and are heading back to New Hampshire where we are camping for the night before we head to our final destination - Montreal! Can't wait!!
Sorry again for the length! We've been having some crazy fun together!
Fun facts: After much peer pressure from the girls, Tony finally shaved his week-long facial scruff . They were so happy to have their soft-faced dad back again.
Tony and the girls have been having an argument to see who has the most "gristle" in the family. (AKA - the toughest) You'll see pics and will have to decide for yourself!
We are eating lobster and blueberry pie each and every day! It just keeps getting better! Maddie is getting tired of
sharing her dessert with her parents, though and Julia couldn't care less about eating pie!!! The nerve of her!!! I also want to mention that Julia is completely obsessed with looking at the inside of every lobster that we eat. She keeps asking questions that are literally making me gag - "Why does that stuff look like guacamole in there?" "Where is the lobster's heart and lungs?" We had to make a new lobster rule: No asking questions about lobster anatomy until Mom is finished eating hers!
See you in CANADA!! Love, The Dunns!
