Salem Kentucky

Salem Kentucky is a small town in Western Kentucky about 12 miles west of Marion and 30 miles east of Paducah. Approximately 750 people live in Salem which at one time was the county seat. There are no schools in Salem as the children all attend a Livingston County School as the result of consolidation. There is no formal government In Salem however there is a Mayor and City Council. Police matters are handled by the Livingston County Sheriff's Department or the Kentucky State Police.

There is very little retail business in Salem where once there was a new car dealership. Two out of town banks provide banking service. There are two gasoline stations in town and both are operated as convenience stores. One has a snack bar. There is one medium size grocery store in town. Two of the primary employers are the Hospital and the Nursing Home. The small town has several doctors as the result of these two facilities. A concrete products manufacturing plant on East 60 is the only manufacturing facility in town. We noticed it was not possible to go to the local phone company as it has moved to another town and service has to be conducted on the phone or internet.

The closest movie theater is in Princeton, Kentucky about 30 miles from Salem. There are no entertainment venues in Salem although at the time of this writing there was a teen center on the est side of town. Several churches are located in Salem. High school sports are located in Smithland, about 16 miles away.The Salem Garden Club seems to be one of the most active organizations in Salem. New entrance signs along US 60 have been landscaped and look quite good. A small lot in downtown Salem has been purchased and marked for development into a garden park.
