I am University of Kansas PhD student travelling to Antarctica as part of the Polar Radar for Ice Sheet Measurement (PRISM) project. However, I do not work on radars. I work on the mobile robot that will tow the radar across the ice sheet. I have spent the past three and a half years developing and testing this robot.

The first team of PRISM researchers departed last Thursday. Their goal is to set up as much of the equipment as possible before the second team arrives. I will be on this second team and leave Kansas on December 18th. I will travel first to Christchurch, New Zealand. From their, the second team will be transported via military aircraft to McMurdo base. At McMurdo, I am to undergo some survival training for the field. I will finally travel onward to the newly established WAIS divide camp.
