2014 09 04 Day 3 Not much to report today. We got an earlier start than usual, leaving the motel at 8:09. It was raining, but not so much that it made driving difficult. When we got to President Herbert Hoover's Birthplace and Museum about two hours later, it was sunny and warm. The Hoover museum and birthplace was very interesting and informative. We spent about a half an hour at the blacksmith shop listening to the blacksmith explain what life was like when Hoover was a child, and how things were made back then. I had always thought that Hoover was responsible for the Great Depression, but apparently, it was more Coolidge and Mellon than Hoover who caused the depression. We had a long day of travel. We left Columbia, MO at 9:00 a.m. We arrived in Sioux City, Iowa around 5:30 p.m. We had to come to Iowa to see rain. Had almost forgot what that looked like. Hope they get rain back in Illinois. I am sure the farmers here in Iowa are glad for it. We are parking in Sam's parking lot for the night. We went shopping at Sam's. We have a McDonald's right here so I can use their Wi-Fi for my blog. Forgot to mention yesterday was Carolyn's(one of our fellow travelers) birthday. We are headed to South Dakota tomorrow. It has really cooled off here after the rain. It was 93 before the rain.... read more

I won't bore you with the details of my training, but just a few comments. With the exception of the riding I did in New Zealand in early 2009 and the erratic rides on some bike/running trails I had done very little riding. I decided the first thing I needed to do was get a descent bike so in August I bought a TREK hybrid. It had street tires and a straight handle bar. I started riding the trails around Longview Lake and worked my way up ... read more

It has been a party in the planning process for quite some time—well about 100 years to be exact. On Feb 20 our good friend and world traveler, Dr Lloyd Tinkle would reach the century mark. We just realized that we have never known anyone who was born prior to World War I and before jets took to the skies and television and the internet filled the airwaves and before penicillin was discovered and before moonwalks and atom bombs. As a matter of fact, that was the theme of Sandra Bowern’s multimedia presentation in tribute to Dr Tinkle. The Cruise Director, Jamie and his wife Dana had been working intently on creating a fitting celebration to honor “Tink” on his special day. Leading up to the party, Jamie interviewed Dr Tinkle for the ship’s television ... read more
