In today's society, we honor Christopher Columbus for finding the "new world" in 1492. However, historians have began to question whether the "hero" should be a hero or not. Columbus treated the Native Americans horribly. He used Violence and slavery, as well as forced the Native Americans to become christians.

My reaction is very shocked and disturbed in a way. I did not know that Columbus treated the Native Americans so horribly. I now associate him with a slave master. He wrote in his journal that he blieved they would be good servents! Being partly Tanio myself, I find that very shocking! They were basically treated like dirt.

In class, we are learning about some of the most famous explorers. Columbus is one of the more famous explorers. To know that the person you honor has done something so terrible is omething that we need to know about to move on.
