The Pride of America
Our crossing of the Pacific was uneventful. We arrived late and tired but ready to continue following the path of Captain Cook. Our plan for the day is to visit the beach then board our ship. We set sail in the evening for the Big Island. Scholars and anthropologists believe that the early voyagers travelled across the Pacific in sailing canoes. We are not following that plan. It is believed that they set off from Tahiti somewhere around 100 and 300 A.D. They navigated by the stars towards what is now the Hawaiian Islands. The Spanish and English ships passed Hawaii in the 16th Century but the islanders remained sealed from the outside world for centuries. They did not encounter Europeans until Captain James Cook and his crew arrived in January 1778. The Hawaiians offered the English several pigs. The islanders also marvelled at everything on board Cook’s ship. Cook only spent 3 days ashore and filled his journal with superlatives equal to anything they he composed before. Cook was delighted by his brief stay on the Islands. As a mark of his esteem, he gave to the Islands his favourite name: Sandwich. Like Cook, we are delighted by everything we

Our arrival in Honolulu
