Breakfast on the Balcony
Breakfast in our cabin - out on the balcony Last night we ordered breakfast to be delivered to the room. We had to get up early for it, but breakfast was delivered at 6:30. Everything came as requested except they brought a pot of coffee instead of hot water for tea, but that was easily corrected. So we got to enjoy a nice quiet breakfast on our balcony.
We had to use the tender to get from the ship to the shore here in Maui. They announced that we were 6 or 7 cable lengths from the dock, but all that tells us is that cables are long, because we were quite a ways from the dock.
Our bus tour today took us around the western half of the island. We saw a lot of different kinds of terrain (extinct volcanic mountains, flat agricultural plains, beaches and cities), all within a fairly short distance. The first stop was in the Iao valley where King Kamehameha fought a battle back in the 1600s to unite all the 8 islands into one country. We drove up that valley until we got to “The Needle”, which is a high/narrow mountain that looked like a needle stuck in the terrain. We got
Tender from Pacific Princess
Tender rides to and from the ship to spend some time hiking around in that park. There were many beautiful plants and water features. David walked the 133 steps up to get a better view while Janet waited on a bench below.
Afterwards we went to the Maui Tropical Plantation. We each got a bowl of delicious ice cream (Janet had Macadamia Nut Chocolate and David had Pineapple Coconut) while we waited for a tram tour through the gardens. The guide pointed out lots of different plants and explained a lot about the agriculture on the island. She even demonstrated how to get the husk off a coconut. We saw a lot of sugar cane and the machine they use to gather it as well as pineapple plants. They also had some strange looking ducks and two monkeys that refused to pose for the camera. All together it was very interesting.
We were driven back to town and spent a little time browsing in the shops. Then it was back to the ship via the tenders again and up to the buffet for a late lunch.
After a rest in the cabin for awhile, David went to the pool for a swim and Janet
The Needle
Needle as seen from the Aio Valley went to Trivia again (the questions were much harder this time). We then stopped at the future cruise desk to get some more information about possibly going through the Panama Canal next year, but they computer wasn’t working correctly and they will have to send us the information. Then it was off to dinner.
For tonight’s dinner Janet had the giant crab legs and David had Chicken Kiev. Like all the dinners previously, there were appetizers, soups, salads and desserts. Altogether it was delicious once again. We compared stories with a table partners concerning what everyone did that day, and we feel like we made the right choice for us for this first visit to Maui. Then after dinner we went to another comedy show which included the juggler from previously in the Cabaret Lounge.
Unfortunately they have started delivering the paperwork that needs to be done before the cruise is over. We have another two days before the cruise is over, but this is a sad sign that things are beginning to wind down. But we will still make most of the remaining days.
