Today was very eventful. Some long-time friends of the Scotts from Oahu and California came to the big island to visit. We all decided to go down to Waipi'o Valley, most known for its breathtaking waterfalls and black-sand beaches. I think some of the pictures turned out nicely... but still no justice for a live view. They was bright blue and the water, clear to the bottom. We saw another whale from a distance - i attempted to take a picture but if i put it up, you'd think i was lying... it's so tiny. The route to the bottom of the valley is very steep and curvy. Me, Kathy, and Naomi (from California) walked down part of the way and Dave took the Honda down - we hopped in later. The bottom of the valley opens to the aqua waves crashing on black sand and stacked round rocks. We followed the rocks for some distance and ended up near the most massive waterfall i've seen. Ok so that's not saying much. But it did seem enormous in comparison with the dozens of tourists taking pictures below. There was also a wide river nearby that opened into the ocean - Dave
Horse
They have horseback rides down the trails... this guy was speaking some weeeird language with one of the visitors from Oahu. She didnt understand him either. warned of sharks that occasionally swim in looking for fresh water fish. I didn't go past my ankles, mom. Just disregard the picture where i'm up to my eyes in waves. jk. OOOk so my favorite part was this cute little lady - one of the guests in attendance from Oahu. I'm told she's 50% Hawaiian, which is fairly uncommon in Hawaii, oddly enough. Her name is Charlotte... Charlotte apparently knows the names of every variety of flower and plant on the islands, as well as their ancient history and medicinal purpose. I sat next to her in the SUV with the windows rolled down - every now and then she'd stretch out her hand and bring in a portion of a plant of some sort. Then she'd mumble it's name and purpose and carefully place it in her ziplock bag, already containing 10 different varieties of nuts and rocks from the shoreline. The other people in the car would curiously point out of their window and ask Auntie Charlotte what a particular plant was. (By the way, everyone here is Auntie or Uncle... it's a familiar, tender term). If she didn't know, she'd reach out of the car, grab
Valley
View from the top... it, examine it, and carefully put it in her bag alongside the other items. Oh she turned to me when she first met me and asked me the name of one tree, she asked in some hawaiian language and was confused when i looked back at her dumbfounded. Her daughter told me she thought i was a native and assumed i spoke her language. lol. Ok so i call her medicine woman. She is so adorable! And very funny too! Christina, you know the guy who sang the rainbow song, Iz? She calls him 'Was' cuz he died. It's so funny coming from this cute little lady!! Aww i heard that song today, C, it made me miss you!! And Krystal i got your message today... on the way back from Waipi'o Valley. I had the Fra-Na-Na song stuck in my head for hours. I miss you so much! haha... Umm i was gonna get black sand for some of yall but i had nothing to put it in. So i got a picture. 😊
I'm suuuper tired so - blah blah blah, so on and so forth and then the day was over. It was wonderful 😊 I
