Today I awoke to NJ turning on her music and saying “Rally Aly oxon free!! Time to wake up!” to which I replied by playfully throwing my pillow at her and sighing “fine.” I changed into my build clothes and was grateful that for the first time in 7 days I didn’t have to pack up my sleeping bag & thermarest.
We scavenged for food for breakfast and I ended up eating some of the left over chicken salad with Kristi and what I believe was decaf coffee. We split up by odd and even numbers so the evens went to go roof and us odd ducks got carted off to go help paint a house.
We were working with the City of Savannah housing department and arrived to find no construction manager. We spoke with the woman’s who’s house we were going to help beautify and she explained which colors went where. We began taping off windows and painting the trim off-white. She asked us to pull out the nails from around the house (I’m thinking they were used to help hang Christmas decorations) before painting so I did that all around the house and then began helping
paint the trim in the front of the house. It was a hot & humid day and feeling dehydrated (van days you tend to not drink as much water!) and hungry (thank God for Sarah and her cliff bad snacks!) water breaks were necessary at times. On the plus side, the house across the street was blasting loud music with everything from worship music to sexy soulful music. It was like a block party and I didn’t hate it!
Some thunder, lighting, & rain rolled through and forced us to cover up the paint and seek shelter in the van twice. Eventually we had to call it at lunch since the storms were going to keep rolling through and only get worse. Painting and rain don’t mix! So we bid farewell to Qumi and the homeowner Ms Kitchens, but not before snapping a photo together! We were very grateful for the Firehouse subs they provided for us and munched on those on our way back to the host.
Once we were back, I decided it was time for a shower since I hadn’t showered since that hose in front of that church ? I’m finding that I am
constantly covered in bike grease and that it’s always under my nails, but I love it! After discussing how Bike & Build is weird with Aiden in the trailer showers because “we cream & powder our hineys” I went back inside to find that most people were enjoying some relaxing, quiet down time and/or naps. The group got back from their build and lunch with the former mayor and they too followed suit in taking advantage of rare down time. At one point Jana asked me why the shower trailer wasn’t working and I asked her if the hose was on ?apparently turning the hose on did the trick
After catching up on the blog (yay finally!) I found Noah, who was reading the Gospels, and we chatted for a while and Amanda chatted too for a bit about their build on the roof (also lacking a construction manager) and how they got the star treatment from an alum who showed up with fruits, veggies, & popsicles—all the good stuff! I painted my nails light purple while Bachelorette Crew watched the latest episode and talked bikes with Mikey—so helpful & knowledgeable!
I then hung with Jana and some
others until it was time to go pick up the DM dinners I scored for us from Texas Roadhouse—steak dinners with a baked potato and corn for everyone! Aiden didn’t want his sweet potato so I traded him my regular one and threw some of their special butter on it & I was in all my glory! Carly and I also stopped at Culver’s (going rogue!!) and got fried cheese curds & frozen custard—man what a great food day!
The team all super appreciated the steak dinners and then we transitioned into playing the paper game! We played 3 rounds and all laughed hysterically the whole time! An alum from NC2SD11 named Colin arrived bc he’ll be riding with us to Charleston so we chatted with him and his wife (?) Alicia about his med school and finishing up his family medicine residency—much in common with some of my NC2SD friends! ?
Though I was feeling anxious (cabin fever!) and wanted to go downtown and see some of the sites, no one else was going down there so I called mom & sis and we’re able to catch up with them for a while which was nice! ?
CULVERS!!!
In Georgia! Jana and I did our safety Nav evaluation form together, despite the spotty wifi, and enjoyed a brownie from Beth’s mom. By then it was around 10:30pm which means time to fill up the camelbak and get my clothes ready for our ride tomorrow into South Carolina!
