This morning I again awoke in the middle of the night freaking out that I slept through an alarm/didn’t have one set. When it eventually did go off at 5am, it was too soon and I was still so exhausted. Tempted to snooze but knowing I had trailer packing duties, I forced myself to get up and pack up my freshly washed clothes before heading out to help pack the trailer while getting eaten by mosquitoes.
Breakfast was again bagels, fruit, & coffee. Ryan, Kristie, Jana, & I met briefly since we were on van duties for the day. We helped him come up with silly nicknames and finished cleaning up the host. At route meeting, Jess presented town facts by singing “Savannanana” to the tune of “Havana” and it was so cute! As riders began to ride away, Ryan and I stopped for gas and I walked across the street to pick us up some coffees from the local shop. Of course I got caught up chatting with the owner so Ryan came and picked me up and we were on our way!
We enjoyed watching the riders ride safely together and the long roads full of nothing
but green trees. We had some great conversation and stopped at Panera Bread for a mid morning (8:30am) snack and potty break. I told the group about it since it would be 38 miles into their 90+ mile day and many ended up taking the advice! ?
We drove on and the good convos continued all the way to the host. Noting some construction, we informed the team, filled in the white board for host info when the team arrives, chalked their turns (& many others on the road), and I unpacked the trailer while Ryan helped hook up the shower trailer provided by the host church.
Hot & sweaty, we were back on the road on a mission for food & to catch up with our riders. I was pumped to find the gas station we stopped at for food had my favorite f’real choclate milkshake and enjoying that made me happy again. I was going hard on the DM train trying to get our team food for the next few days while we’re in Savannah since there would be not host dinners and I’m part of dinner crew. I was able to score 100 wings from
Buffalo Wild Wings and 8 pounds of various chicken salad from Chicken Salad Chick. I was pumped and was able to boost team morale a bit since they were having a long, hot day.
To help support the team, we had a water stop and the first two groups were doing fine on time and in spirits. Later on they informed us that the roads to the host were full of tracker trailers and that the other two groups should not ride them. We circled back to sweep sweep, offer water to the back two groups, and eventually pick them up to shuttle them the last miles to the host. It was already 3:30 and they had rode 75-80ish miles so they were grateful for the pick up. With that long of a hot day and bad roads with no shoulders and lots of traffic, I thought it was a good call to shuttle them since their head wouldn’t be in the right space and it just would not be worth pushing through those last dangerous miles.
Everyone showered and decompressed and Aiden and I drove over to pick up the DMed dinner and man did it smell
good! Everyone was super appreciative and thanked me a lot, though really it was fun for me to DM, and plus, it means I get to eat well too ☺️
We then all ubered to downtown Savannah where we went to Moon River and played HQ again and walked around the town. It was fun seeing the history and squares at night and sitting where the Forest Gump bench was filmed! We ended up at Sorry Charlie’s where Carly consumed her first shrimp ever! Lots of firsts on this trip for this girl!
Eventually we all started ubering home, but not before stopping for pizza! We got back and I still needed to pump up the ever-so-annoying thermarest so I did so downstairs since I was part of the last group home. Finding floor space upstairs with everyone and ready to crash, I threw my thermarest and sleeping bag down and was out faster than you could say “My mama always said ‘Life’s just like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get’”
