The Air Race Classic uses a handicap system which allows different make and model airplanes to compete in the same race. Handicap Flights determine the handicap speed for each team. (Similar to a golf handicap)
Handicaps are determined prior to the race, by flying a box pattern, in smooth air at 6,000’ density altitude, while maintaining maximum continuous power. (This cancels out the effects of tailwinds, headwinds, and crosswinds.)
Thought you’d like to see what our pattern looked like.
By using a GPS device during the handicap flight, the race committee calculates all points in this box pattern to determine the handicap for the race. We won’t get the final handicap speed until the start of the race!
Excited about flying in the air race classic with so many amazing fellow pilots!
I will be co- piloting with Tamra Sheffman in her Cessna 182P. This will be Tamra's 9th air race and my first.
Between the two of us, we have over 27 years of flying experience in single engines, twins and seaplanes.
We are competing in the air race to help promote women in aviation and to remind everyone, everywhere, that if you want to do something, just go do it. Women can fly!!... full info
